Just that really, don't often get to go so want to make the most of it!

Loved - Billy Elliott, Phantom of the opera
So so - wicked, we will rock you
Didn't enjoy - lion king, singing in the rain

Current thoughts are Hamilton (but if I've watched it on Disney is this a waste?!) Les Mis, Matilda, SIX, open to other suggestions too!

Hoping now I'm no longer with ex-DH I might get to go more often but probably not enough that it won't matter if it's rubbish!!

Les Mis is very long and although iconic songs my teenagers and parents couldn't follow the plot not knowing it before and auditorium was too dark to read the programme!!

I always liked Matilda. We saw it three times and not just for the kids.

Sunset boulevard at the savoy with Nicole Schertzinger. It’s brilliant! Failing that, Les Mis or Hamilton.

It is but it closes in two weeks and is almost completely sold out for the rest of the run.

If you go to Hamilton, get stalls seats. We were upstairs and the sound was fire - couldn’t make out the lyrics. I didn’t enjoy the show at all.

Interesting, we sat front of dress circle and apart from the shocking leg room felt like we had the best seats in the house.

I can’t wait for Starlight Express next year - saw it twice about 40 years ago!

My favourite this year though, although not strictly speaking theatre, was ABBA Voyage. Absolutely awesome. Really enjoyed Six too.

sep135 · 24/12/2023 16:42

I love Les Mis, could happily see it every year. Personally we found Matilda really boring and I was relieved when it ended.

Purpleavocado · 24/12/2023 16:47

Hamilton and Les Mis are brilliant. We made a day of Six by going to the Tower of London in the morning, which was really fun.

I've done both - front row of the Royal Circle and 3rd row of the stalls. I preferred the Royal Circle but I the DH preferred the stalls so that probably doesn't help!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/12/2023 16:54

Les Mis would be my number one recommendation based of your preferences. Hamilton is also really good but less emotional, definitely worth seeing live. Matilda was so so. Six is great, I’ve seen it twice, but it’s short and presented like a rock concert. I’d prefer to seemSix in a group whereas the others I’d watch alone. All good shows though.

randomstress · 24/12/2023 17:00

I didn't much like Wicked when I saw it.
I recently saw Hamilton and enjoyed it.
Dd loved Six and said it was more like a short concert than a traditional musical, she much preferred it to Wicked which we saw together on Broadway.

RunningGearOn · 24/12/2023 17:05

Hamilton was spectacular and I'd watched it on Disney+ first as well. Les Mis is a classic, seen it live many times and always love it - the songs live are incredible. I'd say bring tissues for both though, but I'm a softy that cries easily 😅 also agree that Back to the future is worth seeing.

I'm hoping to see Mrs Doubtfire next year, and based on this thread I need to investigate Hadestown too.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/12/2023 17:20

Not SIX I thought it was a waste of money - an hour long pop concert very screechy too

Welshcheddar · 24/12/2023 17:23

Les mis, Hamilton, Guys and Dolls.
I think familiarity with the songs/plot beforehand makes the experience even better.

JassyRadlett · 24/12/2023 17:26

Operation Mincemeat is the best thing in the West End at the moment.

Hamilton and Matilda are both great too but OM is something quite different.

LetMeJustCheckMyCitrusPocket · 24/12/2023 17:31

Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre is a fantastic production, really fresh and vibrant.
Loved Hamilton, not sure what the current cast is like but did think it's much better live than on TV. Jesus Christ Superstar is touring next year and is really good if done well.

falgelednl · 24/12/2023 17:42

Les Mis is my absolute favourite so would always be my number one choice. Seen it many times.
Six is fabulous - like a concert but very clever and uplifting. Seen it many times.
&Juliet is also fabulous - a clever twist and full of songs you know without knowing. Seen it once but already got tickets for next November.
Hamilton is great but helps if you’ve watched it and know the story - lyrics are very fast! Seen it once, considering seeing it again.
Book of Mormon - fabulous and very funny but check it’s your kind of humour!
Wicked it good - I’ve seen it, my DD wants to see it.
Lion King is clever but not in my top 3 (maybe not in my top 5) but seeing it again in June.

we also want to see Come from Away and Newsies.

Absolutely! I am
Not shy to be a "mincefluencer" and recommend it to anybody and everybody. Jak malone especially is fantastic and Dear Bill makes me cry every time.

Weird. I’d give opposite advice. Sound excellent upstairs and you wouldn't be able to appreciate the choreography properly in the stalls. You need to be looking down.

cardibach · 24/12/2023 19:10

The new Guys and Dolls production looks excellent.
Cabaret is the single best theatrical experience I’ve ever had (but not sure if you can get tickets short notice)
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is fun.
Hadestown is on my wishlist and opens in Feb
Hamilton is amazing. Seen it twice and have tour tickets.
Pacific Overtures is a beautiful score but not heard anything about this production
Six is great, actually - but it’s 90 mins no interval so depends how you feel about that.
Standing At The Sky’s Edge is absolutely at the top of my list and opens in Feb.
Book of Mormon is fab if you have a high profanity/blasphemy threshold.

nottodaytomorrow · 24/12/2023 19:12

Forgot about Book of Mormon.. that's fab too Grin

DH preferred the circle, I prefer the stalls (seen it a fair few times and I love the show). I find it live so much better than Disney+ because the close up shots mean you lose so much of the choreography and complexity of what's happening elsewhere on the stage with the recording.

WhiteRabbitBlackCat · 24/12/2023 19:41

I'd recommend:

Six, but as others have said, it's very short for a musical.

Hamilton, enjoyed it but wouldn't see it again.

Back to the Future, had great effects and dance numbers, but I couldn't always follow the plot, so I just tried to enjoy the spectacle. Thankfully, I'd bought a rush ticket that morning so didn't spend too much money! (Saw this on Broadway so possibly not relevant to your question!)

Hbh17 · 24/12/2023 19:44

Hamilton and Cabaret are both fab.
But if you want something totally feelgood, I would say Guys and Dolls at The Bridge.... it's just joyous.

LutherRalph1 · 24/12/2023 20:07

Tina is brilliant, saw it last week - so much talent!

NoShitHemlock · 24/12/2023 20:14

I have tickets for next year for Matilda, Come From Away, Hadestown and Les Mis and have seen Six and Hamilton (we are a musicals family - usually combine it with a week long trip to London instead of a holiday abroad) - I would highly recommend both. Yes, Six isn't very long but its just so good! DD is obsessed with both Hadestown (which we are seeing in London) and Come From Away (which we are seeing in our home town on tour) but I think she would probably recommend Hadestown over Come From Away.

I just want to go see Moulin Rouge but it has been vetoed by DD as its "not original music" (she is a musicals snob obvs)

practicepracticepractice · 24/12/2023 20:16

& Juliette is brilliant. https://www.andjulietthemusical.co.uk/

Six is excellent. Really short.

Loved Hamilton
