Stomach and ribs feels like they’re bruised and injured. Anyone had this?

All across my middle section it feels tender and uncomfortable as though someone has used me as a punchbag. The pressure of a bra is intolerable. It’s across my ribs but no lower than my belly button. When I woke up this morning it had disappeared but is now back with a vengeance.

I had this once before about two years ago, but the GP said it was because I’d taken very strong antibiotics and to drink yakult. No antibiotics this time, so what is it? Obviously I’ll talk to the GP again, but just wondered if anyone could shed any light on it.

Gastritis? Have you had a lot of painkillers and/ or acidic food?

SpikeWithoutASoul · 22/12/2023 17:16

No, I don’t think so. I’ll try Gaviscon and see if it helps.

Costochondritis? Very painful.

Any gallbladder issues? I would feel like this when my gallbladder was grumbling. Not a full blown attack but my ribs would ache.

Also costocondritis can feel very uncomfortable with bra straps.

MummySS22 · 22/12/2023 17:39

Second the gallbladder
I have gallstones and I often feel like this when it's inflamed.

Naptrappedmummy · 22/12/2023 17:41

Yes it was pleurisy

upinaballoon · 22/12/2023 17:45

In the days when I had a gall bladder I sometimes felt as if I'd been kicked in the ribs and sometimes as if I'd been shot in the ribs so I was just wondering if there are any of those issues. Probably first time it bothered me was when I thought I'd been reaching up, gardening, and strained all my midriff muscles.

I think this too. I've had it and it's so painful 😣

inloveandmarried · 22/12/2023 18:00

I had this severely to start and then on and off for a few years. It felt like huge pressure under my ribs as though something was trying to push all my ribs outwards, forcibly.

GP said it was gastric and I was on a lot of tablets to reduce stomach acid. But it wasn't. It went if I took back to back ibrufen. If I took this as first discomfort started I could knock it on the head within 3-4 days. If not it could be months of this horrible discomfort.

Then after a few years my referral came up to see a consultant and he did complete tests and a contrast CT scan.
I have mesenteric panniculitis.
It wasn't active at the time as it wasn't flaring but the damage was evident.

Treatment is anti inflammatory meds. So what I was doing was the right thing anyway.

It's helped just knowing and being able to act early when I need to.

idontlikealdi · 22/12/2023 18:28

Sounds like costo to me
Too, it's awful. I have had a couple of episodes, one was six weeks, one was a couple of weeks. If you press down (gently!) on your breast bone does the pain radiate out?

ThisIsTrifficult · 22/12/2023 18:30

Could it be shingles? Never had it personally, but going by how my mum described the pain.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 22/12/2023 18:45

Thanks all. Been googling the other symptoms of your suggestions. Def not pleurisy as breathing is normal and has no impact on the pain. Not sure about gallstones. Possible though. It comes and goes and not a sharp pain. Also not sure it’s painful enough for costchondritis. It’s more of a heaviness. Feels like I’m lugging around a bowling ball between my ribs!

@SpikeWithoutASoul how are you now. This MP was picked up for me during a fairly pelvic scan for something else but not had a referral yet to see anyone.

I often have bad stomaches but the pain I experience is much lower than you describe. I feel with me its worse and or aggravated by stress.

Itwasallgoingsowellthenboom · 23/09/2024 09:01

Kidney stones?

Rasputin123 · 23/09/2024 09:06

With me its definitely mesenteric panniculitis as showed up on MRI.
