If I upgrade my Samsung watch, will it still function as a watch?

Without the connection to my phone?

The man in the shop is convinced it will cease to work at all but I can't work out how that's possible - surely just the stuff that connects to my phone will no longer work on there?

I'm confused 🤔

Surely you'd just link the watch to your next phone?

LittleMissNaice · 22/12/2023 17:50

edit- d'oh wrong thread

lucysmam · 22/12/2023 18:12

@Sugarfree23 that's what I thought but I wondered about whether the old watch would be useable as a watch, without the smart features?

I'm asking for a new Samsung watch for Xmas as I've recently upgraded my phone and it turns out my watch is now too old to talk to my phone!
So for the moment I'm wearing my watch without it having any connection to my phone and yes it works absolutely fine as just a watch. I can still use some of the apps too, timers etc

Sugarfree23 · 22/12/2023 18:47

It should work as a watch but I'd be tempted to trade it in rather than have a smart watch without the functionality of a smart watch.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 22/12/2023 18:56

I have a samsung watch, i think its the 2. I'm fairly sure it gets the time and date from syncing to the phone when I switch it on.

RebelMoon · 22/12/2023 19:04

Are you wanting to use the old watch and a new one? If so, then can both be connected to your phone. I have three Samsung watches. I just switch them over in the Samsung app depending on which one I'm wearing. You don't need to go through the whole pairing rigmarole each time.

lucysmam · 22/12/2023 19:19

@RebelMoon can you call & text on them all?

I don't want to pay x2 watches iyswim but this current one still works. I hadn't considered whether I'd be able to keep the original one connected & wear it if I fancied a change 🤔

Yes I can call, text etc on all of them.

If you go into the Samsung Wear app and click on the three lines on the left hand side it brings up a list of the watches you've paired, then you just click on the one you want to connect. See pic. You can only have one connected at a time (as far as I know) but you can have multiple devices paired.

Are you paying monthly for a separate 4g connection?

If I upgrade my Samsung watch, will it still function as a watch?
lucysmam · 22/12/2023 19:37

Yes, for the current watch. But the assistant in the shop confused me saying I'd have to cancel the current watch, which will then not work at all, to be able to pair the new one.

OP posts:
RebelMoon · 22/12/2023 19:44

You don't need a separate 4g connection for the watch unless you want to use it when you don't have your phone with you. I've never had a monthly contract for any of mine, they're just bluetoothed to my phone so use my phone's 4g connection. You're better off buying the watch outright and using it via your phone. Hope that makes sense, I'm not good at describing tech stuff.

lucysmam · 22/12/2023 20:34

No, you've been really helpful, thankyou @RebelMoon!

I don't have my phone on me at work so like to be able to see any messages from the girls on the watch so will pay for the cheapest plan going for it & keep the current one for days when I fancy a change & am not at work.

Both watches should work with the Bluetooth connection to the phone.

But if its the sim card, why not swap the sim from one to the other when you want to swap watches?

lucysmam · 23/12/2023 07:24

@Sugarfree23 it's not an actual sim in the watch though - it's a qr code you scan. Presumably that's linked to the current watch?

OP posts:
RebelMoon · 23/12/2023 10:41

Yeah I think it's like a virtual sim, will only work on one watch. The other one will still work though, as long as your phone is nearby. Even if it isn't nearby the watch will still work as a watch, you just won't get any calls, notifications etc.

Thanks again @RebelMoon , I really appreciate your help!
