When did you realise your boss doesn’t give a frick about you?

I’ve only recently come to realise that my boss really doesn’t give one fuck about me or my wellbeing/progress. I’m a PA.

She constantly takes credit for my work and gives vague criticisms when she is in a bad mood.

I used to ask her about her weekend or holiday plans and she would tell me all about them but never ask a single question back.

Usually manager’s get their PAs a small christmas gift or something. It’s the done thing at my company. I decided to buy her a bottle of wine and a card and she said “thanks, are you hoping for a good appraisal at salary review?”

I'd get a new job and then ask for an exit interview with HR and throw her under a bus

Well I've worked for my large employer for 23 years with no more than an occasional sick day. My daughter is autistic and my husband and I have carried on for 6 years of almost no sleep, anxiety etc without it affecting work. My reviews have always been excellent and I'm routinely praised for my work.

Recently my daughter told me she had suicidal thoughts I took an emergency day off as I couldn't leave her alone. The immediate response was I could have one day but any more would be unpaid. I hadn't even asked for more than one day.

Now looking for other roles and my GP has signed me off for a month as he is worried about my blood pressure and my mental health

When I was chased for cover (am a teacher) the day after my husband (unexpectedly) died

darksideofthemooncup · 23/03/2024 21:48

When on bereavement leave after my father he called me to berate me about a minor issue in a property he has. I don't even work for the company that he runs his property portfolio in!

Oddsocks55 · 23/03/2024 22:54

Goodness, some of these are terrible.

I'm lucky to have a boss who does care. When I was away for work in a different country and got ill, he stayed with me until I was well enough to fly home, then when I collapsed after getting back into the UK, he came with me to hospital and waited several hours until my husband arrived.

They're not all bad!

When I'd been in my role as a Learning Support Assistant for 3 weeks (with no induction, training or mentoring) and was told I had to teach a class for an afternoon. I was given a PowerPoint to go through with them but no worksheets or anything. I made that PowerPoint had to last 2 hours.

No support whatsoever.

Another one; I worked as an assistant manager in a shop and was in agony with a urinary tract infection. My day off wasn't due for several days and back then the GP surgery wasn't open late and didn't do phone appointments. Initially, my manager wouldn't let me leave the shop to go to appointment but when I started weeing blood I insisted. The pain was awful and I was prescribed antibiotics. The manager told me to come straight back to work because the antibiotics would "start to work immediately and you'll be fine by the end of the day".

Same manager; wouldn't let me book any holiday because her sister was having a baby and she needed to be available to get to her when she went into labour. This was from the sister's 20 week scan.

Same manager; drew up the Christmas/New Year rota and put me down to work Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve. She had all 3 days off.

God, Leonie you were a horrible, horrible person.

There was taking ages to fill in mat leave paperwork.

He didnt prioritise it at all.

They redid the office and were supposed to put the printers in x place. We can in and it was next to my desk.
Asthmatic, and pregnant.

Its not good for your lungs. Anyway i hot desked for months. (And other colleagues didnt understand as they didnt know i was pregnant.)
Ridiculous anyway as our team hardly used printer but it was for whole dept.
But too loud to sit next to.
Another team member (lovely older man) ended up moving there. But he shouldnt have had to the comqpany should have fixed their error and put it where it was supposed to be!

When she tried to stop me going to a medical procedure ( needle biopsy of the breast as something was found on a mamogram) so that a colleague could go home to wait for her painter and decorator to pick up a set of keys. She knew damn well that I was on the 2 week diagnosis pathway but didn't like me ( something she later informed me of during my exit interview).
She was awful and had a rotating cast of favourites.

Easipeelerie · 24/03/2024 07:22

My boss is perfectly pleasant and reasonable but he wouldn’t care if I lived or died.
My old boss is now my best friend.
It does help if the care , even a little.

Hoping that "tried to stop me" meant you ignored her bullying and kept your appointment.

Really, I do hope Hell exists - in whatever form - so people like this would go straight there! 🌹

@newnamethanks I contacted our HR rep and informed her that I would be leaving on time even though it left the department unstaffed. HR knew of this managers behaviour with previous staff so told me that it wasn't my responsibility to stay.
Unfortunately this manager had been TUPEd over on a watertight contract so getting rid of her would cost the company a huge amount.

Very small business (owner and 3 staff). No cental heating in my office that is in the attic. We have 2x oil fired radiators to heat a big office. We leave them on in winter on a low setting to try and keep some heat in the room.

Owner comes in after we have all left and turns them off. Every single day. Cue us coming in every morning to an office that is freezing. Bought a thermometer and it has been as low as 4 degrees some morning. We have begged him to please stop turning them off but he doesnt care. Is happy for us to sit with coats & hats on.

Of course he has cental heating I'm his office. He also has the heating set to go off at 2pm which is what time he leaves everyday. Doesnt care that his staff are in the office for another 3 plus hours.

This is just one of the many things he does to show his absolutely disrespect to his staff. He has lost staff in the last couple of years and not replaced them. We are running on 60 less staffing hours per week but with the same work load. He point blank refuses to talk to us, his plan is that we just somehow suck up the work. Has never even spoken to us after a staff member leaves to discuss the workload. He didnt speak a word to me for 7 months last year all because I sent an email requesting a meeting to discuss what the plan was after the last member of staff left.

We are all only staying for the sake of our clients although I dont know how much longer I can cope with his behaviour. Especially after not so much as a merry christmas and an Christmas card never mind the bonus I was expecting.

MILTOBE · 24/03/2024 19:32

Could you all set up a rival company, @Nomorebeer22?

ElinoristhenewEnid · 25/03/2024 07:02

A friend of mine was a supermarket delivery driver and was robbed of a delivery.

Went back to depot shaken and was told to finish deliveries.
Police came to interview re robbery and boss refused the interview during working hours - had to be in own time.

Loubelle70 · 25/03/2024 07:05

Just tell her , no, you thought the wine would help her relax.

PA yes but....

Ive had it from male manager. I did most of work whilst he sat on his throne taking the credit...i was actual manager then..but he was controlling everything i did...unworkable.I packed the job in.

IDontLikeMondays88 · 25/03/2024 07:08

When I had a baby and she didn’t send even a very small gift for baby. Even like a cheap supermarket baby grow. This was a woman on £500k per annum
