What has been your favourite gift you've ever received for Christmas?

I still remember the joy of receiving a pair of fur lined boots at aged 8, and a Timex watch the following year.

What's yours?

My karaoke machine I got for Christmas early 90s. Not only did I love it but all the adults in my family did. It was the main entertainment focus at the family Christmas party with everyone queuing up for a turn. Such lovely memories.

My cabbage patch kid - he was called Barry Tommy (not by me, you got an adoption certificate with the name on) and I bloody loved that doll…

I later went out with a bloke named Barry and my family took great delight in calling him Barry Tommy at every opportunity

Tiny Tears (1960s), A dolls house - which I absolutely loved. As previous poster I also had a toy animal (panda) pyjama case.

CoodleMoodle · 22/12/2023 19:34

Probably my talking dolls house. It had 3 dolls with round disks on their feet, and they said different things depending on which circles you put them in the house. I think it even knew if there were two of them on circles at the same time, and they'd talk to one another. This was in the mid 90s and it felt so futuristic even then! The doorbell chimed and I think there were a few other things too.

I've loved reading all these - it really does show that the memories formed in childhood stay with us forever, doesn't it.

Mine was Game Of Life when I was about 10. I have no idea why I was so obsessed with it but I wanted it SO MUCH. Got it and then no bugger would play it with me because it took hours to set up and sort out.

As an adult, probably a lovely necklace that I had admired in passing. I was so thrilled that they had gone to the trouble of tracking it down and buying it. I still wear it now and have very fond memories of that particular boyfriend Grin

This sounds like absolute witchcraft

DilemmaDelilah · 22/12/2023 19:58

I'm hoping it will be this year's present. I think my very DH has got me some Vivaia shoes, which I particularly asked for. The box looks the right size for shoes!

It felt it at the time, too. I was amazed, simply couldn't work out how it was all done.

This is the advert for it. They sounded exactly like that, very robotic... But at the time I was just so in love with it, I didn't care!
tokesqueen · 22/12/2023 20:00

My roller boots circa 1986. Still have them.

Bbq1 · 22/12/2023 20:03

A hand built dolls house. It had loui offcuts of carpet as carpet and it had working lights. Circa 1979. I wish i still had it now and wonder whatever happened to it.

Alchemistress · 22/12/2023 20:05

@CoodleMoodle

I can see why! I would have been totally suckered in by that too. Although my 2020's self is appalled that the mum is the one saying ' this place is a MESS!' while running a hoover around while the Dad says " I'm HOME!"

stayathomer · 22/12/2023 20:08

Lite brite, Spirograph or fashion wheel. Oh or a harmonica!!

PandaCory · 22/12/2023 20:10

The denim jacket I got when I was 11 (early 1990s). My 15 yr old cousin and her friends all had them so I felt really grown up, lol.

Denimdenimdenim · 22/12/2023 20:15

A PS1. Oh my goodness, I played spyro for weeks.

In recent years, a spa day was well appreciated.

Dazedandcovidconfused · 22/12/2023 20:15

the Jem Rolls Royce that has a tiny radio in the back. I was so happy I cried.

Honeyandwine · 22/12/2023 20:17

What a lovely thread. I remember my nan had bought me a hair accessory each week when she went shopping and put it into a box for me. By the time I opened it at Christmas it was jam packed. She didn't have a lot of money and she had taken the time to build up the gift over a number of weeks. I was so excited when I opened the box.

PermanentTemporary · 22/12/2023 20:24

A cupboard. I think I was 10. My parents bought me a beautiful glass-fronted cabinet to keep things in. I'm afraid I mainly remember it because it was HUGE, the biggest present ever. I'm still a bit like this about puddings in restaurants, I always want to ask which one is the biggestand I'm 54

That sounds amazing! I would have loved that and would have wanted to be your friend just so that I could come to your house and play with it 😂.

My favourite was a Sindy House when I was 5. I had asked for it for ages. It was taller than me and was all set up in the living room. All my other presents were the furniture for it. It was completely kitted out.

I have a photo of myself on Christmas morning in front of it, in my pyjamas and new slippers, eating a bar of selection box chocolate. I look very happy indeed!

Spidey66 · 22/12/2023 20:31

A dolls house when I was 5. I loved it, played with it all the time.

I didn’t find out for about 10 years my Dad had been in the shed since October making it.😍

I don’t know why it took me so long to work it out. The carpet in the dolls house was exactly the same as the carpet we’d just had put down in the living room! 😂

I don’t know what happened to it. After both my parents died and we were cleaning out the house I hoped it would be in the loft but it wasn’t. They’d moved a couple of times including from London to Ireland then my mum moved back to London after my dad died so it must have gone astray somehow. 😥

Mumaway · 22/12/2023 20:35

One of those dairy milk plastic dispenser machines, that for 2p gave you a mini chocolate bar

Catsfrontbum · 22/12/2023 20:38

I’ve had a few great ones.

Canbage Patch kid- loved her!
A toy post office kit- it had a real
ink pad where I would frank mail. I loved it so much
a real typewriter one year.
the wet wet wet album on tape- popped in souled out- I would have been 11 maybe….i was so into them!!!

Mollyplop999 · 22/12/2023 20:54

Hannah and her horse. It was fully jointed and posable. It was the closest I'd get to a real pony 😁

My pound puppy I got in 1986 when I was eight - I still have him! He's called Churchill and he lives in my son's bedroom now with his soft toys.
