I always think that 84 to 87 inclusive were the best years of the 80s music wise.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/12/2023 20:06

The Power of love is the most breath taking song ever

Honeyroar · 21/12/2023 20:08

We were just watching and discussing Relax. We thought it was banned at the BBC?

It's one of mine and my mum's favourites. We played it at her funeral.

TheTecknician · 21/12/2023 20:11

Relax. Mike Read refused to play it on obscenity grounds and then the BBC kind of followed his lead. It's quite a good song. Tony Blackburn liked it. I thought Two Tribes was rubbish. Power of Love is great...but it ain't a Christmas song!

MermaidEyes · 21/12/2023 20:13

Power Of Love hit No 1 in early December, that's why it's sometimes classed as a Christmas song.

AgnesX · 21/12/2023 20:15

I love Power of Love, such a good ballad.

The Thompson Twins were brilliant too.

Absolutely

Honeyroar · 21/12/2023 20:36

Yes I agree. Before S,A&W ruined everything!

The Power of Love single became a Christmas track because of the video mostly.

norfolkjmummy788 · 21/12/2023 20:37

Loved Band aid at the end. They are looked a bit awkward though

Honeyroar · 21/12/2023 20:44

They were all miming to the wrong parts. It looked strange with Simon le Bon’s voice coming out of Sting’s mouth!

SeriousFaffing · 21/12/2023 20:51

Currently watching - there really has been some real bangers.

I enjoyed Paul Young gegging in on the Duran Duran backing vocals.

Yes, so did I.

SeriousFaffing · 21/12/2023 21:02

@Honeyroar It seemed to me as though they were all just having a bit of a singalong, rather than miming to the wrong parts. They showed a few singing along to George Michael’s part.

Really loved it. A time before everything was contrived and overly rehearsed.

Honeyroar · 21/12/2023 21:08

Yes I know they were. It was just a bit strange how they filmed it.

TOTP was one of the highlights of my Xmas day.

It certainly was at the time - but I imagine they have played things with far more suggestive/explicit lyrics since and have probably relaxed their stance (no pun intended!)

@Awwlookatmybabyspider FGTH The Power of Love. Agree, it's just beautiful ❤️

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 23/12/2023 08:07

It was amazing - discussed with DS 20 but he didn't get how good it was.
The Bandaid singalong at the end - was everyone there? Spandau Ballet on the balcony - Bananarama ? Also Black Lace ? Do you think they just had an open call for any pop stars?
(Also loved Paul Young singing Wildboys)
It's a shame Wham didn't make it into the studio.
