Brussels sprouts. Noone else likes them in this household so I ate them all. A whole family pack of stir fried Brussels sprouts with a bit of bacon and shallot sauce.

I thought I might just get a bit gassy but I can't actually sleep for how much my stomach is burning, almost like when I have a bug. I think i might be sick. Lesson learnt. Don't do it!

God, I remember one year when I ate way too many sprouts because nobody else wanted them and I was practically levitating off my chair Christmas night with the farts. We were playing board games and it was like biological warfare with everyone turning green and keeling over around me 😂.

Hairofthemonster · 21/12/2023 00:12

Are sprouts like lentils - do they only make people farty if they don't usually eat them?

We eat roasted sprouts all through winter and I'm not a gassy person at all!

Hairofthemonster · 21/12/2023 00:13

OP maybe you do have a bug though?

The sprouts may being blamed unjustly!

Is there a way to make it not happen? Is there something we can eat to offset the effects?

I love sprouts 🥲💨

Yes. It's the shock to the system rather than the sprouts themselves.
Though no one in this house believes me that if they ate more greens it wouldn't happen since the roast cabbage topped with harissa chickpeas incident of June 2023.

MulledWineBeMine · 21/12/2023 00:18

@Hairofthemonster

funnily enough there was a program on c5 tonight called something like supermarket Christmas in the 70's. A bloke set up a lab showing you how/why brussel sprouts make you fart. Clearly I wasn't paying much attention (wrapping presents & MN at the same time!) so I can't explain it, but you should be able to watch it on iplayer or whatever.

im going to to try!

I eat a lot of sprouts (in season). Im vegetarian & live alone, so roasted sprouts are fairly often 'dinner in its entirety.

id blame the bacon for you stomach ache!

BrendasIronSledge · 21/12/2023 00:18

That reminds me of the time I ate a whole pineapple, to similar effect. Not something I recommend.

mrsfollowill · 21/12/2023 00:25

😂😂I'm the only sprout lover in this house - or cruciferous vegetable as Sheldon Cooper would say. Never, ever, overdo it with sprouts or cabbage! There is limit a person should eat in a day. I swear I thought I was back in childbirth once. Swaying on all fours to try and release the pain! (and the gas)

Whatsthisbug · 21/12/2023 00:26

I rarely have them, maybe once a year so my system is indeed probably shocked!

I just expected to be gassy which I tend to be anyway but this is something else!

DCs have had slightly dodgy tummies so it could be a bug I suppose but I'm still putting my money on all the sprouts.

Oh god I'm so worried! I have an early start and long drive tomorrow, I need to be able to sleep!

Oh really? DH is adamant that he once got 'carrot poisoning' from eating a whole bag of raw carrot batons. I always make fun of him as I don't think that's a thing but perhaps it is!

@RichardsGear I was supposed to quote your post

mrsfollowill · 21/12/2023 00:40

I'm sure you'll be fine in the morning - try doing the 'downward dog' and release the gas- google 'Sheldon Cooper Farts' on You Tube! Thursdays will no longer be cruciferous vegetable day.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/12/2023 00:41

Oh dear OP.

I mean it could still be a stomach bug, or even a stomach bug plus too many sprouts. At least if it is the sprouts it all should pass fairly quickly through the erm..digestive system.

OracleofWurms1 · 21/12/2023 01:10

im guessing lots of wind will follow

Then also shouting of "The horror"

coxesorangepippin · 21/12/2023 02:40

Yeah I had the pineapple shits once too

Ate about a half of a fresh pineapple

Instant diarrhea

Ugh

CavalierApproach · 21/12/2023 19:50

We need an update on how you got on the next day with your long drive, @Whatsthisbug 🥬

CavalierApproach · 21/12/2023 19:51

Or rather, today! Wow - I honestly thought this thread was from at least 48 hours ago. My internal clock is way out as we hurtle towards Christmas.

Whatsthisbug · 21/12/2023 20:02

I was OK all through the night actually! I fell asleep and the burning subsided. I had a pretty dodgy tummy first thing in the morning and perfectly fine after that! So really not as bad as it was gearing up to be thankfully!
