Can't sleep because of the wind ...

My bedroom is in the attic and it's really noisy up there so I'm sleeping on my daughter's floor. The wind is so loud and I'm imagining it ripping off my roof tiles. We lost our ridge tiles (new roof - dry ridge system) in the last storm and I'm lying here waiting to hear the new tiles dump on my car. Is anyone else nervous about Storm Pia and can I have a hand hold? Thanks lovely mumsnetters

Yes quite loud here too. There is a fireplace in my room which is really helping to amplify the gusts via the chimney.

It always sounds worst than it really is I think and worry won't make the wind any less strong. Just know you're not alone awake listening to it.

GalaxyStars · 20/12/2023 23:57

Thanks Glitter, that really helps. I fell asleep around 11 but then it woke me up and now I'm wide awake again. I hope you're right about it sounding worse than it is. I'm just hoping my ridge tiles don't fly off again. From what I read they sound like they should be stable now that they've been adjusted!

It doesn't help that we're on the top of a hill and very exposed at the back. Good for views but a bummer in storms.

It's wild here, too. I can hear it swirling and howling round the house. I haven't tried to sleep yet but the noise is very disconcerting. My spaniel isn't enjoying it either, he's curled up at my feet at the end of the bed.

Ever so often a gust of wind rattles the letter box and sounds just like someone trying to get in. I know it’s not, but it’s so loud and insistent that it makes me jump every time.

GalaxyStars · 21/12/2023 00:04

The met office app says it's only 33MHP at the moment but I don't know how accurate that is. It feels much worse. It's swirling and flapping all around. I'm in a 1930s semi and it feels like the whole thing is going to blow away. Trying to rationalise that the house has stood for 100 years and must have weathered far worse!

@zigzag716746zigzag the letterbox would freak me out too

Our bedroom is really sheltered and I'm often oblivious to the weather, but tonight it's so loud that I'm finding it quite unsettling. My husband just had a 2 hour drive home and I couldn't relax till he got in and I knew he was safe.
It sounds like the windows are going to blow in!

ShittyGlitter · 21/12/2023 00:07

Can you pop tape over the letterbox? That would drive me mad also!

idontlikealdi · 21/12/2023 00:08

Also in the attic and not in the warning area, it's noisy up here.

GalaxyStars · 21/12/2023 00:08

Where abouts are you @MaidOfSteel? I'm in South Yorkshire and my windows are rattling at the back too. It's horrible. I don't know how I'm going to sleep Confused

Tell me about attic living @idontlikealdi. Ours has only been done a couple of months and I'm starting to regret it to be honest. They've done a nice job and it's amazing to have more space (and finally a second loo) but it's been so loud up there since storm ciran that I haven't slept well for ages. Is this year unusually bad or do you find that you often struggle with noise in winter?

Me too! I only moved into this house in the autumn and this is the windiest it's been since. Lying awake trying to figure out if the clanking noises are coming from my garden or a neighbour's... 😬

ALongHardWinter · 21/12/2023 01:37

I thought this was going to be another thread about eating too many Brussels sprouts! 😂

Tonight1 · 21/12/2023 01:40

Oh I can't hear anything here at all

wavingfuriously · 21/12/2023 03:09

Wind keeping us awake too + sensor light outside going on and off continuously..probably a branch being blown

RogersOrganismicProcess · 21/12/2023 03:44

NW here and it feels the worst we’ve had in a long time. It might be the angle of the wind but it feels like the windows are going to come in.

The noise from outside is horrendous too: like a cross between a bottle bank and a newly wed’ds car!

panachronic · 21/12/2023 03:52

It's howling here in NW too, I haven't slept a wink and feel very unsettled.

Northernsouloldies · 21/12/2023 03:55

A rolled up hand towel will muffle a rattling letter box.

mollycobb · 21/12/2023 04:07

Same here - on the coast in western Scotland in attic bedroom getting absolutely battered. Roof tiles rattling all around me and when I went to the bathroom the window sounded like it might blow in. Have woken a couple of times but it's really ramped up now and I'm wide awake. Main road from here is blocked due to a fallen tree and all the ferries will be off. Waves were breaking literally up and over the coast road on my way home yesterday. Glad I don't need to go anywhere tomorrow.

MysticalMegx · 21/12/2023 04:09

I'm West Yorkshire and it's really howling and swirling, already had a small power cut

GalaxyStars · 21/12/2023 04:10

It's relentless isn't it! It doesn't look like it's going to calm down for ages yet. My youngest (7yo) is sleeping in the back and I can see her moving about when I've walked past. Can't decide whether to go and get in bed with her or whether I'll disturb her more. It's so frightening here!

Good luck @mollycobb. Stay safe everyone! The windows rattling is horrible. I can't stand the attic tonight, I'm in the middle floor and can hear it's really loud even from here.

Northernsouloldies · 21/12/2023 04:16

Hope it passes soon for you. All quiet Ne Scotland.

Also in West Yorkshire and it is wild!

TokyoSushi · 21/12/2023 05:07

Was absolutely terrible here about half an hour ago in Cheshire, hence being up, but seems to have settled slightly now.
