Can't sleep because of the wind ...

My bedroom is in the attic and it's really noisy up there so I'm sleeping on my daughter's floor. The wind is so loud and I'm imagining it ripping off my roof tiles. We lost our ridge tiles (new roof - dry ridge system) in the last storm and I'm lying here waiting to hear the new tiles dump on my car. Is anyone else nervous about Storm Pia and can I have a hand hold? Thanks lovely mumsnetters

I'm also in West Yorkshire and it's absolutely howling here, dreading going to work

It’s recycling collection today, do I put my bin out or not? they pick up between seven and 730 the neighbours that did their bins have blown down and the rubbish is strewn all across the street.

West Yorkshire here, it’s really wild, woke me around 0500!

@Pigwig10 do you have a dry ridge system on your attic? Our attic is new (this year) and I'm not enamoured with the ridge tiles we have. We have lost them once already and they're very noisy (even in much milder wind). Can you talk to me about what you have on your attic?

I have a dry ridge system, those times don't move at all. There is no reason they should with that system (I know cos I installed it myself).
There are a few brands of dry ridge systems but it sounds like they've left yours too loose. Personally I'd get a trusted roofer to check the work. They just might need a tweak.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 21/12/2023 07:08

(the whole point of a dry ridge system is that it should be more secure in wind not less as you are not relying on mortar adhesion which can fail over time)

South Yorkshire here and it’s awful. Dreading the school/ nursery run

Baircasolly · 21/12/2023 07:10

We're in Somerset, not even in a warning area (forecast is just "gusty winds") and it sounds horrendous out there. My nerves are shot from all these storms already this year.

Tram Service not working here due to fallen trees.

GalaxyStars · 21/12/2023 08:29

Thanks @ArchetypalBusyMum I have sent our attic builders a video of the noise and will wait and see what they say. They are a reputable company and have a very good reputation in our local area. Hoping they will sort it or else change it for a cement based plan instead.

@GalaxyStars I'm glad you have confidence in the after care of the contractors.
This link is an example of the fixing method (though there are little variations on your the principle is the same across them all) and refers to security in strong weather.

They should be very stable and not move at all! If there is any movement it's not right.
Good luck getting it resolved.

Staffordshire / Derbyshire and it’s disgusting outside. Walls, fences, trees all being blown over.
I can’t imagine what it must be like in an attic room. Hope it dies down and you get some peace today.

KnowThyself · 21/12/2023 08:45

My son’s lovely GF is unhurt but a tree fell on her car on her way to work this morning and crushed the windscreen and split open part of the roof. It is a miracle she was not seriously injured. I have seen a thin sheet of metal fly down my road, a neighbour retrieved it. That could have seriously hurt someone.

Bimblesalong · 21/12/2023 08:46

Gawd that’s terrible, knowthyself. Glad she’s physically ok but what an awful thing to go through.

awful too about people’s rooftops.

KnowThyself · 21/12/2023 08:53

@Bimblesalong its her first car, only had it a couple of months and it was her pride and joy. it was right near her workplace who have apparently been amazing. She could have been killed if the tree had fallen a few more inches one way.

Bimblesalong · 21/12/2023 09:08

I know you’ll hug her tight. A nightmare.

user73 · 21/12/2023 09:39

We have three trees down so far but it’s still really crazy out there.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/12/2023 09:54

@KnowThyself thank god she’s ok. (My view point is people are not replaceable, objects are. )

The bins have made a break for it and according to Facebook trampolines are migrating to winter pastures.
