I HAVE SOLVED CHILD NIGHT TIME COUGHING

Ok, so I read an article (truth - watched a TikTok) that said you should get gummy bears and mix them in boiling water, then drink the gummy juice, and it stops you coughing.

I have three kids that have those horrid hacking coughs at night, so I tried it on them tonight. IT WORKED. No coughing tonight at all so far. Straight to sleep x 3.

I am blown away and needed to share this.

Erm, isn't that just the glycerine, ie, the main ingredient of Tixylix cough syrup that you can buy over the counter?

DustyLee123 · 20/12/2023 21:01

I assume it’s glycerine, which is the basis of cough medicines.

enjoyingscience · 20/12/2023 21:04

Yep, you just invented tixylix. Glad it worked though!

Well that makes sense. I think you can obviously assume that if I'm the sort of parent who gets my health remedies from TikTok, and feeds her children gummy bear juice before bed, I did not bother with looking into the actual science behind it 😂

Regardless, my children have always refused cough medicine ("cos it's disgustin"), whereas they happily gulped this down.

Ah I thought you were going to say it was the onion trick. I chop up an onion and put it in my son's room to stop him coughing. Works every time. His room stinks but it's worth it 🤣

Whattheheckcarer · 20/12/2023 21:52

You sound great OP 🤣

Xmasisoffsantahascovid · 20/12/2023 21:53

Once went to get ds some cough medicine from behind the counter.... She laughed and asked did I want the drowsy one... HAND IT OVER BITCH...
worked a treat... Window open works for the 9yo now and he has asthma..

menopausalmare · 20/12/2023 21:57

Propping them up on pillows also helps so they're not flat (assuming it's not a very young child).

moderationincludingmoderation · 20/12/2023 21:59

I find a bite or 2 of a banana puts a stop to a tickly cough

macaronicheezepleeze · 20/12/2023 22:10

I have a horrendous cough and am feeling very sorry for myself. Will stress-eating a share size bag of haribo do the trick just as well?

😭

You need to buy the plain glycerin. It's literally like syrup.

Failing that slather them in Vicks.

on a similar vein, one of the most useful pregnancy tips I ever read on here was to eat marshmallows to cure a cough or sore throat when you can’t take OTC meds

I still do it now because it works and marshmallows taste a lot nicer than strepsils

Easy to choke on marshmallows though, especially during a coughing fit (also learnt on TikTok 😂)

diyprojectnumber538 · 20/12/2023 22:17

Enjoy your full nights sleep, OP 🙌🏻

Conniethecatapillar · 20/12/2023 22:20

My daughter would wrestle me for the haribo first!

Shufflebumnessie · 20/12/2023 23:05

A smear of Vicks on the soles of the feet & a pair of socks on works wonders when DD has an awful cough. There's no way she'd tolerate it on her chest/back but on her feet is fine

I love this 😂

Baby piriton is amazing too.
I was told by a nurse at hospital when he was in with rsv. It clears up the mucus and helps them to be able breathe better.x

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 23/09/2024 16:53

Cover their feet in Vicks and put socks on them too!

In the first year of nursery they catch coughs and colds a lot. I used to take mine on a little drowsy walk around the house. Just enough to get them breathing normally again.

“Ooh, look, everybody’s asleep but the TV’s still winking away in the corner! Can you see the streetlights? And the moon behind the clouds?”

Then tuck back into a warm cozy bed.
Worked for me!
