Opening the stocking from Father Christmas

Do your children open these in their bedrooms when they wake up early or do you open them all together? When i was younger I used to open them whilst in bed still and loved it. I only have only got one child and I was thinking she could open her stocking in her bedroom as she will be awake probably way before the crack of dawn! But then I’m wondering if that makes me miserable if she will be lonely opening it! What does everyone else do? She’s 8 by the way.

Well what has she done all the other years of her life?
I always took my stocking into mum and sat on her bed to open it

PuttingDownRoots · 20/12/2023 21:05

Weve always opened them together. In parents bed.

EdithStourton · 20/12/2023 21:05

I used to open mine in solitary state and really enjoyed it, but my own DC always unwrapped theirs together, and enjoyed it enough to wait until they were all there and ready to go.

Just do what works for you and your DD.

I'm torn over this too, mainly because I don't want to be woken up at the crack of dawn! But I like getting them to bring them into my bed to open!

Lemonademoney · 20/12/2023 21:08

The beauty of Christmas is moulding it to make it your own. I always opened mine in my room but my children have always naturally brought their stockings into our room to open on our bed with us.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 20/12/2023 21:08

We always open them together in our bed, I love seeing the excitement on their faces when Father Christmas has been and leaves a stocking on their bed. But my children have always come to us the minute they wake up, they hate being awake in their rooms by themselves!

SingingSands · 20/12/2023 21:16

Our kids have always opened stockings on our bed. Expect they'll still do it this year at 19 and 15 - but not at the crack of dawn any more thank goodness!

SpringingJoy · 20/12/2023 21:20

Always together.

It used to be on our bed...but dc are now 15, 13 and 6. Having four adult sized people and a child, plus 3 Stockings on the bed got a bit too tight a couple of years ago so we've moved to ds2's room which is the biggest. We all sit in there, either on the bed or floor while they open them.

Frostythereindeer · 20/12/2023 21:24

My DC open them in the living room when we are all together.

I never had a stocking as a child so didn't know about opening them in bed. It sounds lovely.

Awumminnscotland · 20/12/2023 21:28

My 8 yr old loves opening her stocking by herself and it suits us as she's generally awake by 5 at the latest. We usually end up getting up at 6 but not before. I've suggested having it in our room or downstairs but she's adamant she wants it in her room to explore while waiting to get up. I love coming in a bit later and seeing her surrounded by paper and toys and her stuffing face with sweets breathlessly telling me what santa brought.

Daffyyellow · 20/12/2023 21:32

As a child I opened mine on my parents’ bed.

My children hang theirs by the fireplace, so open them downstairs - a couple of stocking fillers, then breakfast, then the rest. Presents after the King.

TheChosenTwo · 20/12/2023 21:35

We always have to wake ours on Christmas morning so woke the first one who went to wake the other siblings up.
They brought them to our bed and all opened together.
Now they’re 19,18 and 12 and a bit too big to be comfortable so they are opened downstairs in front of the fire.

AuntMarch · 20/12/2023 21:39

Only had one since he's been old enough to get it and we were sharing a bed at my mums anyway. I was laying there waiting for him to wake up! But I loved being able to see his face as he sat up and spotted it. He'll be with his dad this year but I'm tempted to bed share at Christmas for as long as he will let me, and when he won't he can hopefully come through to mine to open anyway.

MsMaraschino · 20/12/2023 21:42

Always together, in our bed. Or, now that they are old, next to our bed.

caringcarer · 20/12/2023 21:45

I used to drag my sack into my parents room, my sister's did the same and we'd all squeeze into bed with my parents and open them together. Our big present was always after breakfast under the Xmas tree. I've always left my DC sacks under the Xmas tree because elder son has ADHD and hardly sleeps so we could never sneak into his room whilst he was asleep as he is such a light sleeper.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 20/12/2023 21:46

Yep, always on our bed, and still do now they are 16 and 13. Part of the joy for me is seeing their faces when they open the gifts so I wouldn't want them to do it on their own. When they were little we had a time that they weren't allowed to get up before, now it's the eldest who tells her sister what time she will allow herself to be woken 🤣

Let her decide. Dont try to control every element of her day.
