The problem with Christmas Eve boxes..

Do you think they are pretty pointless?
I mean most give pjs don't they but what's the point of a new pair of Christmas pjs the day before Christmas when you can't get much wear out of them as my ocd wouldn't want to wear them in January 🤷🏻‍♀️

I gave in last year and bought a personalised Christmas Eve box but now I'm thinking of giving ds the box on school break up day so it's a little way off the big present opening day.

What's others thoughts on it? It was never a thing waaay back in my day.

I have no problem with what anyone does btw, just wondering on general thoughts

I’m not one for the “new” Christmas dads but I do like a Christmas Eve box, probably because I’d have loved it. I’ve got DD some non-Christmas themed Pjs, some chocolate and a book. That’s it.

flipent · 20/12/2023 12:02

I do a box for my nephews with PJ's, books and activities. They get it either on the 1st December or at a convenient date in December.
Particularly with the story books, makes more sense for them to have it for the whole of advent and the run up to Christmas.

I keep back a hot chocolate and 'Twas The Night before Christmas' for Christmas Eve.

I don't know what the norm is these days. My kids are 20/21 now!
Father Christmas always accidentally dropped one present off on Xmas eve while were were out in the early evening. It was usually pyjamas, occasionally dressing gown or slippers, depending on what they needed. Not particularly Xmas themed, so not a one night waste! I'm still doing this now for tradition's sake!

We also gradually built up a collection of Xmas books and DVDs (bit retro now!) that we got out on the 1st December. When they were young we added a new item most years, but that gradually stopped. They were very excited to get that each year, but it didn't mean lots of new stuff each year. In fact, revisiting old favourites was very much part of the fun!

I give Christmas pajamas and a new tree bauble on December 1st. Started from the first year she was born.

we use Christmas pajamas year round, but I want the maximum time with them in-season and before they are outgrown.

I’ve never understood why people wait until Christmas Eve.

RuthW · 20/12/2023 12:12

Dd is 27 now snd I still get her new pjs christmas eve so she looks good in the photos Christmas morning. Been doing it since she was a baby.

SouthLondonMum22 · 20/12/2023 12:12

I like them. I'm in my late 30's and growing up I had new pj's, a Christmas book, hot chocolate etc on Christmas Eve so everything but the box really.

WASZPy · 20/12/2023 12:13

We also do Dec 1st. DS is 13 now. Calls it his 'Christmas Starter Pack'. 🙄

WhatNoRaisins · 20/12/2023 12:15

I'm avoiding this while I can but I agree that December 1st makes more sense.

HowAboutTheLittleSpoon · 20/12/2023 12:16

We give pyjamas on Christmas eve but not Christmassy ones usually. Then Christmas mugs we use every year, the Santa snack plate, hot chocolate, Christmassy marshmallows, some reindeer food, usually a bath bomb/bubble bath and twas the night before Christmas book. And sometimes a box of biscuits to bake/decorate to leave one out for Santa. Nothing major really, stuff I'd probably buy/use every year anyway!

NoItsStillNighttimeDarling · 20/12/2023 12:19

I do Christmas Eve boxes that they get on the morning of Christmas Eve but they are basically just a box of activities to keep them busy throughout the day while I run round trying to get organised!

I completely agree about the pyjamas and don't include them for this reason, if I get any Christmas themed ones they are used as early as possible to get as much wear out of them as I can 😂

Tonight1 · 20/12/2023 12:20

It was Xmas eve stockings in my day 😁

BrieAndChilli · 20/12/2023 12:22

mine wore christmas pjs all year- really doesn't matter what is printed on your pjs - you are asleep!!

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 20/12/2023 12:22

Our xmas eve box has pj's for the kids, and a hot chocolate melt thing with marshmallows in. Might add the random box of Milk Tray we won in a raffle this year. Previous years have had a letter from Santa via NSPCC but kids no longer believe. Have also previously had a DVD in there but again we'll choose a family film off Netflix/Prime.

This year the pj's are matchy and xmas themed and I included us parents in it too, but we'll wear them again next year or probably all year tbh, and kids may get a 2nd year from theirs but in any case will wear after xmas too.

It's not an essential but my DD is already looking forward to her new xmas eve pj's so the tradition is stuck now!

marleymoo12 · 20/12/2023 12:24

We do 1st December boxes so they get a wear out of there pjs, a good few activities to do over the few weeks, reading books, a selection box and it's worked great for us

Beautiful3 · 20/12/2023 12:27

I've never bought them nor given in. Honestly find it weird to give a present the night before Christmas?! It's just commercial profit making at parents expense, isn't it?! Why buy pyjamas that theyre only going to wear for that week?! They'll outgrow them for the following year. We just make a gingerbread house Christmas eve, and watch Christmas films with hot chocolates. I love how excited they get, for opening their presents on christmas morning.

Emmacb82 · 20/12/2023 12:28

They don’t have to be Christmas pyjamas 🤷🏼‍♀️ But even if they are what does it matter if they wear them throughout the year? Personally it’s a waste if they’re given on the 1st December and not worn after Christmas is over!

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 20/12/2023 12:32

We did Xmas pjs on Dec 1st (from the elf) which will hopefully be worn throughout the year and on Xmas eve they open their present from us which is always a book.

Sartre · 20/12/2023 12:33

I do the new pjs and socks on Christmas Eve so they match on Christmas Day morning for the photos. I don’t even use social media so it’s never been for the ‘gram or whatever, it’s just for my own personal gratification. Also get a pic of them all in front of the tree in their pjs on Christmas Eve.

MammaTo · 20/12/2023 12:35

I’m 32 and always got Christmas Eve pj’s - they don’t have to be personalised or OTT Christmassy so they can be worn again.
We always done the mince pie and carrot left out too, so I don’t think Christmas Eve box-type things are new it’s just now there’s a box you can buy to put them in.
There’s been so many posts about Christmas Eve boxes and I honestly can’t understand the stress about them - either do them or don’t, it’s not a big deal.

gotomomo · 20/12/2023 12:35

My dc still want pjs ! I've never bought overtly Christmas ones though, I'd otherwise for tartan perhaps. Now they are adults they like silky ones

NoCloudsAllowed · 20/12/2023 12:37

Nobody makes you do it. I don't because Xmas already involves an endless series of purchases and tasks, cba with extra

BooksAndHooks · 20/12/2023 12:40

We have Christmas pjs throughout December and they are reused or passed down.

Our Christmas Eve basket consists of the things we use for Christmas Eve, the mince pie plate, the reindeer dust, the night before Christmas book, the snowman DVD. So it’s not new things. There are also letters to Father Christmas from previous years, lost buttons left in the fireplace, North Pole coins etc.

We then have a little sleigh DH made that comes out Christmas Eve afternoon full of sweets.

notforonesecond · 20/12/2023 12:42

I do a 1st December box for this reason. I only really do it because I enjoy putting it together, I wouldn’t bother if it was a chore, but I’ve never seen the point of getting that sort of stuff on Christmas Eve.

Baneofmyexistence · 20/12/2023 12:46

I don’t do Christmas Eve boxes of December 1st anything for my DC, it’s too much and not needed in my opinion. They have xmas pjs but they are used all year round, such a waste other wise! When I was little though my sister, brother and I would swap little presents my mum had organised for us to give each other on xmas eve which I did like. Just small things but it kept us calm about the next day and entertained us with something new so I guess that was a Xmas eve box equivalent!

Needmorelego · 20/12/2023 12:47

They don't have to be "Christmas" pyjamas 🤣
I bought my daughter some Pokémon ones. Actually 2 pairs (oh the horror).
She might get them Christmas Eve, she might not.
She's actually had her main present already because she has no patience (in her defence she is autistic!)
We go to Mother in Law's tomorrow so she might get some other gifts early too as it's 3 and a half days until Christmas and she'll want something to do.
