The problem with Christmas Eve boxes..

Do you think they are pretty pointless?
I mean most give pjs don't they but what's the point of a new pair of Christmas pjs the day before Christmas when you can't get much wear out of them as my ocd wouldn't want to wear them in January 🤷🏻‍♀️

I gave in last year and bought a personalised Christmas Eve box but now I'm thinking of giving ds the box on school break up day so it's a little way off the big present opening day.

What's others thoughts on it? It was never a thing waaay back in my day.

I have no problem with what anyone does btw, just wondering on general thoughts

@Makkacakka - yes I get that but it's so unnecessary to buy pyjamas for Xmas if they don't need them. Over consumption of clothing is a massive problem for the environment.

I get that, and we are big on second hand clothes, hand me downs from friends/ cousins, buying from charity shops and Vinted etc.

However one more pair of pyjamas in the rotation is always welcome here! I’m not one for insisting on a clean pair every day, but my DD is still quite little and in pull-ups so between occasional leaks/ drool/ getting weetabix/ porridge/ toothpaste etc down them we do get through quite a few pairs a week.

Of course. My little one is 2 so he has had one pair of christmas pjs so far. But he will wear them until he's outgrown them - I treat them the same as any other pajamas. We don't care what print it has in January onwards! My own Christmas pjs - I wear the same ones year on year!

Newyearnamechangehere · 20/12/2023 14:30

Im sorry you have ocd, its a terrible illness. I don't know what the compulsion is that makes it that you couldn't wear the pajamas but could your children? Or just do hot chocolate and a book if you want to do a little early gift?

@Makkacakka and @AliasGrape - totally get you with such little ones. Mine are late teens so not so messy (most of the time 🤣).

Enjoy those precious years when they allow you to choose their clothes!!

RufustheFactualReindeer · 20/12/2023 17:03

We do pjs…not usually Christmas themed
themed biscuits
large gold chocolate coin
a book (used to be Christmas themed)
Christmas socks
shower gel

still do it now and they are 24, 22 and 20 and we do ds1 fiancé who is 27 😀

All my boy's clothes so far (bar a few items that I just found nice!) are second hand. Mostly from his cousins! I totally agree with what you mean about being wasteful! Will make the most of it while we can, until he becomes fussy with brands!

Aria2023 · 20/12/2023 17:58

I give each on mine one early Christmas gift (from the elves) in the Christmas Eve box. Just starts the excitement off for the big day.

Snowflakecookie1989 · 20/12/2023 18:09

I don't see the point either. I do a December 1st box, which the elves used to bring, along with the advent calendars etc. I still do it for my almost 12 year old but minus the elves now.

Bemyclementine · 20/12/2023 18:16

We have the bloody elf, which often brings the stuff most people put I'm an Xmas eve box, little presents through December.

Fizbosshoes · 20/12/2023 18:18

We've never done Christmas eve boxes or Christmas pjs although occassionally my dc got pyjamas (any sort) as a present on Christmas day. They didn't need them every year.
I wouldnt have been able to afford a christmas eve box when they were little unless they had it instead of a stocking.
But if other people want new pyjamas eery year I'm not fussed what day they get them!

Myotherrideisabroom · 24/12/2023 19:54

I always got new PJs and slippers on Christmas eve, they weren't wrapped but we always got them for after our bath. They weren't necessarily Christmas themed. I'm in my late 30s, my DH isn't from 'oop North' and never got new PJs, so possibly a regional thing.

My son always gets new PJs on Christmas Eve but aren't Christmas themed.

birdglasspen · 24/12/2023 20:01

Mine don’t have a box. I’ve not mentioned Xmas much today at all, 4 year old went to bed at 7pm, 2year old at 8 and hoping the only one who has a clue will sleep soon, he’s 7. No way I’m exciting them with boxes I want them asleep😂😂

Needmorelego · 24/12/2023 20:06

I gave my daughter one of her pair of new jammies but we are at mother in laws place which means the heating is 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞 so she is sat on top of the bed in just her undies (tmi - I know). I am trying not to melt.

strawberry2017 · 24/12/2023 20:07

I do a box of goodies on the first. PJs, advent calendar's, Christmas story books get bought out again.
Like you don't really understand the point of Christmas Eve PJs 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/12/2023 20:09

In dd6

New Xmas pjs - will wear again so not just tonight

Chocolate coins

Xmas sticker book - magic painting - placemats colouring

Felt tips

Reindeer food

Santa key

Gave to her this am. The books and colouring entertained her most of the day

Whataretheodds · 24/12/2023 20:11

The 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas Eve. How many days would you expect them to wear the PJs in a season?

Needmorelego · 24/12/2023 20:17

@Whataretheodds my daughter's new jammies have Pokémon on them. She can wear them until they fall apart as she has pretty much stopped growing. We will probably get at least 4 years out of them (going by previous jammies length of life)

Myridiculousstomach · 24/12/2023 20:18

We do normal pyjamas as a gift on Christmas Eve so they can be worn all year. Sometimes a dressing gown - depends what is needed. I usually add a book and sometimes a board game too. But it’s all stuff that they would otherwise have got for Christmas anyway.

Once they have the pyjamas they are just pyjamas with a motif, and get worn any time of the year.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/12/2023 20:22

The answer if you want to do it is either Dec 1st or Twelve Days Before. You could even add an item each day.

But also to get over the ridiculous notion that Christmas PJs must only be worn for a few days.

The kids had CiN PJs they wore all year, then axmas PJs they wore all year.i do put away the Xmas t-shirts but I wouldn't confine a t-shirt with a bucket and spade on to August

Previousreligion · 24/12/2023 20:29

I think it's silly tbh and dc get more gifts than they need already without getting more on Christmas Eve (or even 1st Dec). But I guess I'm a Scrooge as I don't do Elf on the Shelf either.

AnneValentine · 24/12/2023 20:33

I’ve been getting new pyjamas on Xmas Evelyn for 44 years and wear them all year round. Your mistake is buying Xmas themed ones. Many of us don’t.

It was a thing unless you are 90+ years old... it may not be a thing YOUR specific family did but it was a thing that existed (you even acknowledge that though with you 'most gets PJs' comment, I mean what do you think that tradition is?).

Calling it a 'box' is technically new but the tradition dates back to WW2 and the word box is splitting hairs, you can present it in anything (or nothing).

No one ever said it had to be Christmas PJs either thats something people have just made up to be offended over (but even christmas PJs can be worn all year around, I mean who sees you in them? You can eat creme eggs in summer too not just at easter if you want etc...).

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/12/2023 20:39

We do a 1st December box with pyjamas and a book. Christmas Eve(ish) they're given reindeer food, a hot chocolate and some popcorn and they get to pick a film to watch.

It makes so much more sense than giving Christmas pyjamas on Christmas Eve. Non themed PJs would be better but that's not the norm.

The 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days after Christmas day (well 'on' it technically but not before, its ending on Epiphany which is January 6th) which marks when the 3 kings reached Jesus (celebrated in many cultures via things like Bafana, Wassail and Magi).
