Almost five months of quitting alcohol and I’m still struggling to find a substitute red. Does it exist or will I forever be eating cheese 🧀 sans wine?

I've even tried a really expensive one in a posh restaurant and they all taste like Shloer to me. I'd really like to know this too. Honestly, I'm finding a non alcoholic Guinness is better than nothing. I'd don't like lager in the winter and am really just a red wine drinker. Stuck!

Honeyglazed · 19/12/2023 19:26

I’ve yet to find any alcohol free alcohol that tastes remotely similar :(

Theyvegotatrex · 21/12/2023 08:13

Arh not the answers I was hoping for! Everything we’ve tried is awful. Guess it doesn’t exist:(

I've only found non alcoholic mulled wine is nice if that's any good?

QueSyrahSyrah · 21/12/2023 08:16

Noughty is the best of a poor bunch.

Laska2Meryls · 21/12/2023 08:35

Id really like to find something decent red wine-like also..Has anyone tried Jukes cordialities? I was wondering about trying these?
Expensive though .....

ChillyFeets · 21/12/2023 08:36

My BIL drinks Fre alcohol-removed red wine. He says it's great. However he hasn't drunk any alcohol for many years and only just recently has this so he may not remember what real wine tastes like iyswim

Bunny2021 · 21/12/2023 08:38

It doesn’t exist. All non-alcoholic red wine is vile.

Spirits are good - Pentire are the best. I still drink them now even though I’m not pregnant.

EvelynBeatrice · 21/12/2023 12:03

M &S used to stock a very low alcohol white wine that was very good. Haven't seen it for years- and low alcohol wines seem to have disappeared from everywhere in favour of the no alcohol horrors that universally taste vile

Codlingmoths · 21/12/2023 12:04

None. Try the alcohol free gin instead.

SequinsandSparkle · 21/12/2023 12:10

I quite like

fizzy - frexinet 0.0
white - hardys 0.0
red - not found one yet that tastes ok
lager - heineken 0.0

has anyone tried the gin/or other AF spirits?

tbf im happy to just drink sparkling water / with lime/ shloer

DonnasShrugaleros · 21/12/2023 12:15

None. They should get better in a few years as they're throwing a lot of research, money etc into it but for now beer, Gordon's 0, capt Morgan's 0, Guinness 0, kombucha are my go to options. How about Leffe 0 with cheese?

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 21/12/2023 12:25

I had two from waitrose, one 10 quid one 3 both tasted same and not great

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 21/12/2023 12:26

So far the gin is the absolute winner

I tried it. It just tastes like apple cider vinegar.

mindutopia · 21/12/2023 15:14

There are quite decent ones, but not in normal shops. There’s one called Natureo, which I found at Waitrose. Otherwise, there is a red by TempusTwo that I thought was quite good.

Try specialty shops like Wise Bartender or Club Soda as they’ll be able to advise you on one that suits your preferences. AF red wines traditionally were quite sweet because of added sugar, but not anymore with the decent ones. Club soda had a really nice tannin-y one I tried that tasted like a proper wine.

Whataretheodds · 21/12/2023 15:15

They don't taste the same.

To pair with cheese i suggest look at at non-alcoholic IPA

Theyvegotatrex · 22/12/2023 22:36

The Natureo was surprisingly drinkable. Not at all vinegar tasting - just like a light Pinot Noir. Would definitely buy it again.

I don’t drink gin so those are a no go. Wild Life is the best dry fizz I’ve tried to date after many months of searching.

The IPAs are all decent, as are most of the lagers. Morrisons have a really good selection so will definitely be popping back there to stock up.

I think the Jukes cordialities red ('no 6') is a great alternative. Less keen on the whites/roses from them but this one does the job!
