The Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption caused disruption for a number of reasons ~ Wikipedia entry here. Lots of elements e.g. position of the jetstream, melting snow etc came together at the same time.

Yep.

Eyjafjallajokull was a bit special for various reasons.

Aviation generally manages to continue normally despite there being active volcanos dotted around the world chucking out stuff most days (e.g. Etna, lots around the Pacific Rim)... It needs a real outlier to cause disruption seen on the scale of 2010.

There's another big thread on this here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4935114-iceland-possible-eruption-due-near-the-blue-lagoon?page=5&reply=131556412

Rest assured this is nothing like Eyjafjallajökull, which was over a decade ago and by no means the most recent Icelandic eruption. There will be no ash and nobody is in any physical danger, even the people who are quite close (who are just scientists and other people on official business at this stage).
