How do you stop your hallway being full of clutter?

Bags, shoes, coats, hats, scarves, gloves etc.

I obviously need better storage. The kids just tend to dump everything by the door and leave it.

We have limited space under the stairs, which would be the obvious place.

I have hooks up for coats and they are off to the side so not really noticeable as you walk in and the ikea shoe storage (everyone has a box)

Ewoklady · 17/12/2023 12:42

But I meant to add my mum has kallax and the baskets and each person had a box and that’s also fantastic and neat (school bags are still out here as they are too big)

A coat rack and shoe rack under the stairs. Plus I periodically put some away in their wardrobes.

I wish I knew. Ours is a right dumping ground.

RagzRebooted · 17/12/2023 12:44

I have a chest of drawers for gloves etc, several racks of hooks for coats and a massive shoe shelf unit.
Still end up with boots strewn across the floor, parcels and packaging everywhere and random items in transitional phase (on way to tip, etc) dumped there. Storage doesn't seem too be the answer!

Where do you put winter accessories and other clutter like dog leads, wellies etc

Nothing gets left in our hall, no storage for it there on purpose. Wellies shoes coats go in the hot press (I’m Irish, aiding cupboard in the UK?) because it’s right there in the hall, winter accessories like scarves and hats go in their wardrobes.

Cornishmumofone · 17/12/2023 12:47

I have an over door organiser in the downstairs loo. Each pocket has gloves, hats, umbrellas etc. maybe that would work?

I have IKEA GRUNDTAL shelves as shoe racks with a hanging pot for keys. www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/grundtal-wall-shelf-stainless-steel-20341569/

I think you have to be a bit disciplined and try to put things in the space they are intended to be (if you have it). I know that sounds like I'm giving orders, but if you insist that things are hung up, put in their storage box and clutter is moved to its proper home, then it can work.

I'm guilty of gathering stuff in the hall. Well I was, until I got a big cupboard built into the corner from floor to ceiling. It holds the utility meters at the top, coat racks underneath, scarf hooks inside the door, and a box on the floor part for bags. I'm retraining myself to actually USE it properly and I am getting there. Now I can put a vase of flowers on the hall table at last.

bakermummy21 · 17/12/2023 12:52

We bought a slimline sideboard where all the hates, gloves go and some slim wicker baskets underneath for shoes

Utility room - we’re in Canada and have storage for snow boots, clothes etc.

Defaultsettings · 17/12/2023 13:16

I have no room for storage in the hall so everyone has to take their things to their room. Small table with a plant and a pot for keys is all there is. Clutter breeds clutter.

LitenHaj · 17/12/2023 13:26

I would love a utility room or boot room!

Unfortunately a cupboard or sideboard will have to do.

Shoe racks, coat hooks,
Hooks/basket for keys - can you do the same for dog leads.
What other stuff is there?
Have you got a pic?

margotrose · 17/12/2023 13:30

We just don't have a hallway so nobody can dump anything there Grin

I have a coat/shoe rack and we remove the summer items to an upstairs cupboard when the seasons change. I allow the school rucksack to park in front of the shoe rack because I don’t want it anywhere else if it’s got wet or grubby until I’ve had a look at it. For the scarves and hats I purchased a narrow, dark grey, laundry hamper thing which discreetly fits along side. In the summer I switch round the scarves, hats etc. and more summery bits go in there and the scarves up in the cupboard

Nannyfannybanny · 17/12/2023 13:39

We have a porch,DH used a kitchen wall cupboard on the floor,it's now for shoes, wellies at the moment sit neatly beside it. Dogs leads, collars, harnesses x 2, hooks in the wall. Hall isn't much wider or longer than a door, there is a tiny coat cupboard, they go in there, hats, gloves straight into my wardrobe. The bungalow is pretty much open plan. I don't like mess. Last house was a tiny 1930s cottage, coats in the deeper understairs cupboard as soon as we came in.

greenfar · 17/12/2023 13:40

We have coat hooks with shelves and boxes above them.
Shoes go in a giant basket - no room for a shoe cupboard (will have room in future once we stop using buggies). We have other rain/winter stuff in Kallax in the living room which is just off the hall. We wouldn't store them in bedrooms - it's 2 or 3 flights up to the dc's room and we'd likely forget to bring them down. Our hall is the width of the front door so not much room for extra cupboards.

Goldwakeme · 17/12/2023 15:10

We have a boot room/ cloakroom but everything still gets dumped in the hall or on the stairs. 🙄

Esgaroth · 17/12/2023 16:24

We have drawers for hats/gloves and a shoe shelf and coat pegs. It doesn't stop my children leaving their stuff all over the floor 😩
They need asking every single time. I'm just grateful when they remember to close the bloody front door behind them.
