My tinsel is mostly over ten years old. Rarely I buy more because I fancy a different colour.

Theraffarian · 18/12/2023 09:42

For the people complaining about the environment effects of tinsel , it’s the fact that it’s so long lasting that means I have the same stuff from when I bought my house 30 years ago plus additional bits added to over the years . I have no reason to exaggerate the age of my tinsel !
Let’s face it a heck of a lot of Christmas decorations are made of plastic or resin and I can’t see those candy cane lane type tree decorators still using the same decorations in 30 years time , so by comparison I think my tinsel is relatively inoffensive. Also I looked at the paper “tinsel” and by god it was a sad thing , and oddly made of metallic paper which couldn’t be recycled and wire than I assume takes a long time to decompose, and definitely looked like you’d be lucky to use it subsequent years unless you were beyond gentle with it .
The argument that if it lasted that well would mean that it was no longer sold just doesn’t hold water , my children would have both bought some when they moved out for their trees , and yes I certainly did loose some to school plays etc years ago , but I’m fairly sure I lost a lot of things to school plays that would have lasted me years otherwise .

The only version I saw was matt red and gold in Sainsburys. It represented where Christmas spirit goes to die.

Above my mirror I have a length of purple tinsel that I bought for the office Christmas decorations when I was in charge of them and then stole when I left at the start of 1999. I am fairly confident that all my other tinsel is older than that or of similar vintage. I don't know how old the tinsel I inherited from my parents is.

If you are worried about the environment ditch the turkey and any food waste

Ditch the funny gifts that cause a laugh and get binned

Ditch the fancy wrapping paper and cards

You know - ditch things that might make a material and measurable impact

Tinsel is out of fashion it seems

Why would people exaggerate having tinsel 10+ yrs ? I had to buy my own when I set up home with my husband as no doubt my siblings did .I've had some of mine over 30+ years , what about it ? No of course tinsel didn't get handed down . I can't just take my parents stuff .

A good number of mine are passed down (including tinsel). My DM let me choose a number of decs to have after she'd been diagnosed with cancer. I'm very glad she did, as I doubt her husband would have let me have them after she died. I also kept all of Dad's decs that fit my colour scheme after he died too, although neither of us would have suspected how that would all have turned out at the time. It's why some of mine are so old - I remember seeing them up at Christmas all through my childhood, so they must be at least as old as my memory goes back. Dad's would have been bought fresh when they divorced when I was 2yo, but there is a good chance DM's may predate me. Christmas is about family tradition in our house, so bringing them out every year and the memories wrapped up in them is a big thing for me. I had to buy my own basics when I first lived alone and have added the odd bauble to them over the years of course, but I haven't needed to replace any of the tinsel.

Probably all on my tree... my DH is a mockingbird anything shiny and he's there 😂

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 18/12/2023 15:22

Robert dyas, i panic brought some today. Can't they make tinsel recycled?

Sartre · 18/12/2023 16:16

It hasn’t been a thing for many years, has it? I haven’t seen it anywhere for at least a decade, just isn’t popular anymore.

Tinsel lasts years though. Unlike the poastic packagng on every single item everywhere, all the time. 🤷‍♀️

This is the thing that a lot of people forget. Those people slating tinsel will still be buying crackers, balloons, ribbons and bows on their presents, etc. etc.

John Lewis had lots a few weeks back. The cheap "sell everything" type shops on the highstreet have been full of it here.

Plus things like Oodies etc which shed plastic fibres when washed and are ditched after a couple of years when they're scruffy.

SoupDragon · 18/12/2023 17:03

That is a good description of that stuff in Sainsbury’s. It would be depressing to have that in your house.

chattyness · 18/12/2023 17:05

I love my tinsel & re-use it every year, since I first bought it in 1996 I will get some more to add to my collection soon
