Considering the enormous amount of shite we consume unnecessarily in the name of christmas (which does bother me) I can’t get too het up about a few strings of tinsel. We bought ours about 15 years ago and it’ll probably do another 25! Christmas lights are also made of plastic right, and they never last as long.

Moonshine5 · 17/12/2023 21:15

In my front room!

Bernardmanning · 17/12/2023 21:15

Unfortunately some of it made it onto my tree, thanks to the kids decorating it.

stepintochristmas1 · 17/12/2023 21:28

Some of my tinsel is over thirty years and tree is over twenty five years old , so I can't find anything offensive about that .

Barleysugar86 · 17/12/2023 21:30

Bought some at Tesco yesterday.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 17/12/2023 21:43

On my gorgeous tree! Same decorations and tree for over 20 years now, I consider that exceptionally good for the environment!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 17/12/2023 21:56

Tinsel was everywhere last year. I can't remember seeing any apart from the environmentally friendly paper stuff this year.

Laiste · 17/12/2023 22:05

In my cupboard.

I don't use it anymore. I've gone off it. I've got loads of it. One piece is nearly 10 meters long and really really fat! It's a swag from a big fancy department store. It's lovely but like wrestling with a boa constrictor trying to get it up anywhere 😝

Laiste · 17/12/2023 22:06

But seriously there's loads on sale in our garden centre and i noticed lots in Homebase.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 17/12/2023 22:09

Loads in several charity shops in my town. 50p a length or thereabouts.

Beezknees · 17/12/2023 22:09

In the bin hopefully. Looks bloody awful.

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 17/12/2023 22:16

Oh lord I adore it.. I may try and stock up in case it gets banned.

Mine lasta for ever.

whenlifegivesyou · 17/12/2023 22:23

It's pretty grot not sure there's the demand anymore ...

ThatDreamSheep · 17/12/2023 22:26

If you are close to the South West at all Trago Mills have tons of the stuff last time I went!

Weevil84 · 17/12/2023 22:33

It's all in home bargains - loads in my local store!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 17/12/2023 22:36

IsThePopeCatholic · 17/12/2023 12:51

It’s horrible stuff for the environment.

Not really. It comes out, decorates the tree , some pictures etc, then goes into its container for a long nap in the loft until the following Christmas.

as does most I imagine.

Disturbia81 · 17/12/2023 23:46

Loads in poundland, bnm etc

SisterMichaelsHabit · 17/12/2023 23:51

But if everyone buys it once a decade or gets it handed down from parents, then shops have no reason to sell it in the quantities you usually see for sale because between 1980 and now there should have been total population coverage of tinsel (and then some).

So either people are exaggerating on keeping it for 10+ years, MN isn't a representative sample of how people buy tinsel in the real world, or shops have suddenly taken leave of their finely-honed marketing analytics systems.

I personally think a lot of people are exaggerating. Because if you're not, there is no need for it to be in the shops as far as you're concerned, if you already have enough at home. So none of this logic holds up to scrutiny.

Helenahandkart · 18/12/2023 00:27

I’m still using a combination of my grandmother’s tinsel from the 1950s and a bagful I got from a charity shop in the 1990s. I really don’t understand why it is seen as an environmental disaster. It’s not a single use item.

stepintochristmas1 · 18/12/2023 00:29

Why would people exaggerate having tinsel 10+ yrs ? I had to buy my own when I set up home with my husband as no doubt my siblings did .I've had some of mine over 30+ years , what about it ? No of course tinsel didn't get handed down . I can't just take my parents stuff .

justasking111 · 18/12/2023 00:39

I've had most of my Christmas decorations many years including tinsel. My tree is pure 80s. A riot of colour and memories.

TrinityTinselToes · 18/12/2023 02:06

Floralnomad · 17/12/2023 21:08

Loads in our local Tesco , can’t abide the stuff

Well perhaps Tinsel can't abide YOU ay ??!

Rickenbackergoodgrief · 18/12/2023 04:51

@SisterMichaelsHabit I don't understand why you would think that people are exaggerating how long they've had tinsel etc.
Some people buy new tinsel annually because they like the latest ' in ' colours.
Others may buy some new because theirs is looking past it's best.
Others may buy some because they happen to see a piece in a particular colour or length.
Others may be replacing bits that they've lost to various school plays etc.
Others like myself aren't bothered about the latest 'in ' colour and quite happily continue to use the stuff we've had for years, including lights, baubles and other decorations.

merrymelodies · 18/12/2023 05:02

Haven't seen or used or even thought about tinsel since I was a child. I certainly never had to get rid of it once Christmas was over - thank goodness.

Undineimmor · 18/12/2023 05:44

Barleysugar86 · 17/12/2023 21:30

Bought some at Tesco yesterday.

I only have the smaller shops near me but went into two different Tesco's and bothing!
