Ffs tonsillitis and now a UTI - antibiotics question!

Was diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday and given a course of amoxicillin. Woke up today with a UTI and I'm not sure if the amox will treat it or if I need different antibiotics too. Currently on hold with 111 to ask them but I figured someone on here might know! It's deffo a UTI, not a side effect of the amox.

Trimethoprim is normally first choice for UTI, a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water or juice will work just tastes awful

Trimethoprim is no longer first choice, too much resistance, it's nitrofurantoin round here.
Noone will be able to tell you if the amoxicillin will work without sensitivities for the UTI bacteria.
Bicarb may help symptom management as it neutralises the urine so you wee out the infection. Drink lots of fluids while you wait for a response.

Trimethrporim is usually first choice, if it doesn't work then it's nitrofurantoin

Amox is a broad spectrum antibiotic so should kill anything. (I have bladder issues and take cefalexin long term, sometimes they give me different ones, I’ve been cefalexin since 14, I’m now 43). Lots of people can’t actually tolerate nitro so they’ll give trimethoprim but any of those will be fine.

It depends on the bacteria most of them are immune to antibotics so you'll need a certain one.

I have a uti that I've had for 3 weeks now nitrofurantoin is meant to get rid of it, despite 3 courses of it it's still there. 😭

You may need to change the antibiotics. Nitro never do it for me. It may also be general irritation and pelvic inflammation left by the infection- you might need to look at internal oestrogen like Ovestin to restore the tissues etc.

I've still got the infection from lab results I have bleeding as well (not showing but in my urine if that makes sense!)
Problem is there's one other antibotic I can have but they're worried it'll make me very poorly as it'll conflict with my other medications.

@EndOfMyTether11 interesting article in the Guardian today about antibiotic resistance and UTIs

IroningThrone · 17/12/2023 14:15

Thanks, no help from 111 either! 🙁

I have nitrofurantoin but tbh I'm scared to take it! I had a bad reaction to a different medication (not an antibiotic) in the past and new meds really set off that anxiety!

Has anyone taken it? Where you okay? The dire warnings about lung problems have me properly freaked out!

Had 7 days worth 2 weeks ago and no side effects at all
I've probably had that antibiotic about 20 times and it's always been fine Smile

Tip for anxiety - don't read the side effects, give it to a trusted person and only ask if you feel unwell

Thanks! Still on the amoxicillin atm, think I have two days left. I never usually look at the leaflet but was trying to figure out if I could take them together so had a scan through!

Think the amoxicillin is working tbh because I do feel better - just totally, totally fed up with being ill!
