That I don’t magically know when we’ve run out of something and that leaving one nugget or two chips in a bag isn’t actually helpful

Woush · 17/12/2023 11:03

Indulge me in the opposite for a moment - something I (parent) resolutely didn't belive about teenage life...

"You'll not get into a club in jeans and converse" (Said to newly 18yo, educating her on the routine "no jeans or trainers allowed" line I was used to from doormen when clubbing in the 90s).

Who knew this wasn't a thing anymore? Not me. She is 19 now, often looks distinctly dressed down for clubbing. Never an issue getting in.

"... you're out if touch Mum...". Cheers.

That they’re beautiful. (I was looking recently at photos from 25 years ago…).

Edited

They are - it's the skin

RedheadRedBed · 17/12/2023 11:10

They don't believe we were teens once and have done it , seen it , heard about it , and thought about it 😂 that's why we're one step ahead .

And yet my year 12 isn't allowed to wear trainers to school.... I wear converse to work!

I always thought they were the same thing !

That’s the point, they are the same (shower cream has some moisturising additions) but she is insistent they’re different.

sprigatito · 17/12/2023 11:14

That vitamins are real
That if the police stop and search you, they are likely to check inside your shoes and find the weed you have cunningly hidden there (this was a real conversation) 🤯

DamsonDress · 17/12/2023 11:14

We had the trainer thing here too!

DD put on Nikes to go out. She looked at me when I asked if she'd get in wearing trainers.

Tbf I actually cringed at myself when I said " We should get you some nice pairs of shoes for going out. " I heard it. 😳

I wouldn't believe you either Blush

We live in a small town in Scotland but definitely have Boxing Day buses!

ectoone · 17/12/2023 11:26

Oh sorry I didn't realise I quoted the OP I thought I had flipped the thread Blush

Haha I still go to bars and clubs and love the fact I can wear comfy jeans and trainers with no problem. Hated that ridiculous rule in the 90s that caps and trainers somehow turns you into a thug.

AngelinaFibres · 17/12/2023 11:31

That the cool kids at school are probably at their peak in school. Unlikely that when they are adults they will be remotely cool.

Haffiana · 17/12/2023 11:44

As someone who had a small toiletries company - the only difference between shower cream and shower gel is the opacity. Shower creams are not more moisturising - that is purely a marketing spiel.

That putting things NEAR the dishwasher does not have the same result as putting things IN the dishwasher

This is news to me too.

Is there not a little dishwasher fairy that does this for you?

We used to have one but it disappeared when I left home and I haven't managed to find out how to get it to come live at mine 🤔 .

Sharontheodopolodous · 17/12/2023 11:48

Mine didn't believe me when I said that when I was young,if you wanted bread, you went to the bakery

Fish,the fishmongers-meat,the butchers etc

Supermakets as we know them now, just didn't exist

They really thought I was winding them up until grandad informed them I was telling the truth

It blew their minds that the Internet didn't exist either

I'll never forget the looks on their faces when grandad told them that if he wanted to find something out,he had to go to the library

Same kids did most if the above-the one where they stand at the wardrobe just waiting for an outfit to fall out, ready to wear while it's still screwed up in their bag is very true

That shower cream is not good enough. She needs shower gel.

Soap! More people should abandon shower gel and use proper bar soap. Much better and doesn’t result in tons of plastic waste. (I know this isn’t the point of the thread 😁)

RedheadRedBed · 17/12/2023 11:54

That microwaves haven't always been around . Only 3 channels and no mobiles and internet when I was a teenager. My DC said life wasn't worth living . Oh yes it was ! No mobiles to record all the fun we had in pubs and clubs .

Freshair1 · 17/12/2023 12:05

Sorry to be a sourpuss but all of these teenagers seem to be remarkably pampered? Are they not told 'no' I won't take you to the cinema/wash your hoody/sort your cooking/rearrange my plans? Genuinely. How are you all running around after them like slaves?

HidingFromDD · 17/12/2023 12:15

That there is a natural and completely free form of light if they just open the curtains. Oh, and that they’re not going to whither an turn to dust like vampires if said natural form of light happens to touch their skin

Again, not the point of the thread.... go and be a sourpuss somewhere else

Apology accepted.

SirChenjins · 17/12/2023 12:29

Oh, another one - if they’re cold in the house they can put on trousers and a fleece, rather than whacking up the heating while they’re wearing shorts and a t shirt.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/12/2023 12:34

That there is a limit to the quantity of clothes you can put in the tumble dryer for it to work effectively.

That that limit is not ‘as many as you can cram in and the door still shut’.

That it is also possible to dry clothes on an airer and if you have so many clothes you will need to run several dryer cycles hanging up some of the bigger ones will actually be quicker and less effort.

Roomba · 17/12/2023 12:37

DS1 (18) expressed surprise when I mentioned that clubs may not let him in if he was wearing trainers. Apparently he had never heard of such a ridiculous notion ever existing.

He also doesn't believe that the corner shop (or any shop) may not be open at 23:30, or at 20:00 on a Sunday. If he wishes to shop there, of COURSE it will be open, right?

Mind you, he is so oblivious to this stuff that even during national lockdowns he would, at least once a week whilst walking home through town, ask "Oo, can we go and have a look in Game/CEX/random clothes shop?" I would remind him - again - that if he just looked around him, he may notice that every single shop apart from food shops were closed? Didn't he think it odd that town was empty of people and every shop's lights were off?" Oh yeah... " 🤦
