That I can help with maths homework because, believe it or not, I am reasonably intelligent and educated.

Mindfulofmuddle · 17/12/2023 10:13

That they not the centre of the universe.

As a teen I didn’t know banks were closed bank holidays.

I always thought bank holidays were when you had a picnic on a riverbank

LittleGreenDuck · 17/12/2023 10:14

That if they stand in front of their open wardrobe looking gormless, the joggers that they want to wear will miraculously fall out of the sky. Despite said joggers being screwed up in their sports bag from last week.

Just realised I've done that back to front. That's what he DOES believe!

Did you grow up in the 1990s by any chance? Banks in the UK went through a phase of competitive branch opening hours and were often open on bank holidays.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 17/12/2023 10:18

That we have a life outside of them?

nancy75 · 17/12/2023 10:21

That putting things NEAR the dishwasher does not have the same result as putting things IN the dishwasher

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 17/12/2023 10:21

@ANightingale Born in 1977, so this is circa 1995. I did t go down because the bus service was also reduced 🤦🏻‍♀️

TBF to my dm the clue is is the name “Bank HOLIDAY”

HotGirlInHell · 17/12/2023 10:23

That light switches perform the 'off' function just as well as the 'on'.

sadbutdontknowwhy · 17/12/2023 10:23

Perihelion · 17/12/2023 10:12

That their parents have their own lives and can't always just drop everything to drop them to their mates house or the cinema.

Really? I worked in a bank throughout the 90s. I don't recall that.

Lucyintheskywithadiamond · 17/12/2023 10:29

That replacing the toilet roll will not cause them any harm whatsoever. I am assuming they think this as they never do it!

Me too, and neither do I - although it was an international not retail bank.

youveturnedupwelldone · 17/12/2023 10:33

That there was a time the internet didn't exist.

The "that they are beautiful" one gets me every time, so true for all of us at that time of our lives I think.

I worked in a high street bank in the 90s and I don’t recall bank holiday opening either.

I remember the huge fuss and ad campaign when my bank began opening on Saturdays tho. That might have been a bit earlier, late 80s perhaps.

aramox1 · 17/12/2023 10:39

Banks being closed is pretty much the meaning of 'bank holiday,' after all😉

ManchesterLu · 17/12/2023 10:51

That he doesn't have a god given right to sit on his arse 24/7 while me and his dad run round after him.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 17/12/2023 10:51

Banks being closed on Bank Holiday is100% the point of, and reason for, the name. If the Banks weren't trading then businesses couldn't trade.

The main Clearing Banks have never opened on Bank Holidays; however some other smaller commercial banks that began to infiltrate in the 80s/ 90s did open some branches.

SnowdaySewday · 17/12/2023 10:51

That giving them lifts to and from our rural location actually costs money. And time.

My mother doesn’t believe this!

The teen in my family doesn’t believe that there are some pieces of paper that need to be kept somewhere safe as they cannot (at least quickly and easily) be replaced.

LightSpeeds · 17/12/2023 10:53

That you can't get a full sized settee into a small car.

SirChenjins · 17/12/2023 10:58

That you don’t need to revise in order to pass exams (despite his lacklustre academic performance to date suggesting otherwise)

That we can come and pick him up from <wherever> even though we’re at work

That he can use the washing machine at a time of his choosing and that he doesn’t have to wait for me to do the family wash in order to have the once-worn hoodie washed

So many things really.
