...a Harvey's Bristol Cream no less. I'm transported to my gran's sitting room circa 1978. It's delicious.

What drink transports you back to the past?

I had an advocaat last night with some bitter Lemon - it’s a homemade snowball and delicious!

HelenFisksBrownSuit · 16/12/2023 17:44

Martini is cheesy here in the uk, but drinking sweet red vermouth neat over ice is a perfectly acceptable thing in Spain. Somewhere in the world these cheesy drinks are very fashionable!

Cinzano and lemonade. My DM always used to have one of these at Christmas. Never any other time of year mind!

Loved a Cinzano and lemonade back in the day.

I bought it to make a trifle but I had to test it first obvs. It's feels like a very genteel drink in a teeny tiny glass

I'm imagining you with your funky little glass and a crochet cardigan (!)

We've had a cupboard full of half used bottles for years, some inherited from my parents' house, so I've recently been finding uses for them. The whisky, cognac and Tia Maria have been making their way into my evening hot chocolate.😋 I do have a small amount of sherry, so was thinking of a trifle, but maybe you've inspired me to drink it instead. 😁

I also have a couple of unopened bottles of port - can't even remember where they came from!

Edited

Port - always with cheese - that's my excuse for eating cheese anyway

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/12/2023 17:52

Gin, dubbonet (sp?) and bitter lemon. Only had at Christmas and reminds me of my Grandma who called it a "gin and it". Much loved by the Queen Mother apparently!

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 16/12/2023 17:53

Harvey’s Bristol Cream is the ambrosia of the gods. Is the MN gavel still in use? If so <<gavel>>

ApolloandDaphne · 16/12/2023 17:53

@BeaLola I have the little cut crystal glass but sadly no crochet cardigan. I'm wearing an H&M sweatshirt!

Blue Nun wine, my parents always drank it

Oh yes, height of sophistication in our house on a Sunday with a big roast and lemon meringue for pudding.

Wow we very swish.

idontlikealdi · 16/12/2023 17:56

Tequila sunrise with grenadine without the tequila for the kids always reminds me of Christmas. My grandad made it a spectacle getting the grenadine perfect so it looked like a sunrise.

Doggymummar · 16/12/2023 17:56

Cherry b we used to drink before going out in the 90s then snakebite Pernod and black when out out. Tonight it's a half pint of Bailey's

I love a little sherry, especially on a Sunday while I’m cooking a roast dinner. I have a little collection of random sherry glasses that I buy in charity shops.

Oh how lovely. I love sherry glasses and the more mismatched the better 🥰

Flappingseal · 16/12/2023 17:57

Babycham!
Southern Comfort!

First time I got drunk i was 17 and raided my parents' drinks cabinet for a dubonnet and lemonade (mid morning, empty stomach!)

I also remember taking sneaky sips from the adults' sherry glasses, but i have never managed to drink a whole glass, however teeny tiny!

The occasional glass of red is all I have now.

QueenOfThorns · 16/12/2023 18:13

A bottle of advocaat has just mysteriously slipped into the basket for next week’s Tesco big Christmas shop Grin

JoyeuxNarwhal · 16/12/2023 18:19

Snowballs! Remind me of family parties when I was a kid/early teens. Just thinking about one and I'm in my auntie's kitchen hanging out by the buffet waiting for the vol au gents to come out of the oven! Xmas Smile

My gran drank brandy and babycham.

My nanna did too. She let us kids have the babycham too because she didn't think it was alcoholic Xmas Grin

I feel all emotional now. I have the very same memory, obviously I wasn't in your aunties house, but that whole big old family get together wad the mainstay of my childhood Christmases. Lots of singing and proper belly laughs.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/12/2023 18:24

Years ago I went to Harvey's Wine Cellars in Bristol for an informal sherry tasting. 9 sherries later I was absolutely banjaxed.

Ohnoitsfinallyhappened · 16/12/2023 18:24

Drink a lot of sherry in this house, definitely not an old ladies drink. Spaniards have it with evey meal (well at least the one's that used to take me out to lunch). Love Morrisons Amontillado. Also just discovered Vermouth and we have port in our house. Yes we drink a lot.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 16/12/2023 18:27

Crème de menthe

classy, me 🤣

Sparehair · 16/12/2023 18:28

Southern Comfort. Taboo. Malibu. Cinzano.

Sweet mixed drinks are far less popular than they used to be it seems- when I was working in the pub as a student every other drink was a something and coke/ lemonade. Now I rarely see anyone with a mixed drink other than G&T ( although I myself enjoy a dark run and ginger beer at home).

Maybe it changed when o in a started serving decent wine.

InefficientProcess · 16/12/2023 18:30

I am not a fan of sherry at all. Or port. Port is definitely worse.

I can get on board with the retro babycham vibes though.

Not really Christmassy, but Passoa and orange juice takes me back to my teen years.

Or my mum drinking Black Russians. But with Bacardi instead of vodka. Making it somewhat misnamed. 🤣 Edited to say, it was actually dirty black not-russians because she made them with Bacardi, kalua and Diet Coke.

ebts · 16/12/2023 18:40

Cherry brandy. I used to get given it on a tablespoon in lieu of cough mixture for some reason from an early age, maybe 4. I got very adept at faking a cough! Luckily it didn't turn me into an alcoholic!

GordoStevensMustache · 16/12/2023 17:34

Babycham, that was my grandma's drink 🍸

Yours may be my fave username so far on mumsnet! And also remember my gran with the babysham.

AdaColeman · 16/12/2023 18:42

I often have a small sherry for aperos, my favourite is Manzanilla, dry and flinty.
It takes me back to Sunday lunches when I was a teenager, when we had a family ritual of sherry, nuts and olives. Happy days!
