Dominic the Donkey?

I was at a Christmas party today and we had to join in with Dominic the Donkey, I've never heard of this song. Others on my table much younger seemed to know it.

Does anyone know it? Where's it from?

Its been around a long time but no idea where it came from.

IveOnlyEverHeardOutwithONHere · 15/12/2023 13:02

Never heard of it. My DS was Steve the donkey in a Christmas play once though.

Spaghettieis · 15/12/2023 13:03

I remember listening to it at school! Isn’t it just one of the classic Christmas set of songs from circa the 50s/60s?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/12/2023 13:05

I only heard it for the first time this year - a friend is singing it with her choir - and I will be very happy indeed if I never hear it again!

I am a fan of all genres of Christmas music, but this dreck is beyond the pale.

ShortColdandGrey · 15/12/2023 13:06

Yep, it is a favourite in our house. It is an old song from the 60s.

Grimbleton · 15/12/2023 13:06

Not sure where it’s from but it was regularly played around Christmas on R1 when Chris moyles did the morning show, which is how I know of it

DanceMumTaxi · 15/12/2023 13:11

I know of it from the Chris Moyles show too.

Same!

AngelontopoftheTree · 15/12/2023 13:13

I've never heard of it.... off to Google now 🎶

Christ.... that's shit!! And yes, Google says it's of Italian origin, from 1960.

ExcellentFabulous · 15/12/2023 13:14

Just heard about it on a game show a few days ago. Apparently it's an Italian thing or of Italian origin, although the Italian host said he's never heard of it.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 15/12/2023 13:14

Ds sang it at school a few years back. As his name is Dominic he was very cross about being called a donkey

Wellwhatsthis · 15/12/2023 13:15

Chris Moyles had a producer called Dominic which is why he played it so often. It’s a great wee tune!

Me too

ThreeRingCircus · 15/12/2023 13:17

It's a song that's been around for ages. DD's love it (and another oldie...... I want a hippopotamus for Christmas) 🤣

Choccyp1g · 15/12/2023 13:17

Never heard of it before, so I looked up some videos.

This one brought tears to my eyes.

It falls into the "so bad it's good again genre"

Yes i also know it from the Chris Moyles show! You don't hear of it as much now but it was everywhere maybe 13 years ago something like that

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 15/12/2023 13:21

I’m another one who knows it from the Chris Moyles Show. I play it for me kids now, my almost 2 year old points at the smart speaker and asks for ‘onk-ee’.

Fulshaw · 15/12/2023 13:24

Yep, Chris Moyles!

Doggymummar · 15/12/2023 14:00

Amazing I am out of date! I'll be glad not to hear it again!!

It was the Chris Moyles show for me as well! Didn’t he try to get it to Xmas number 1 once?

Needmorelego · 15/12/2023 14:23

A few years ago the Sainsbury's in-store Christmas music was a bunch of old fashioned songs including Dominic the Donkey and the Hippopotamus song so a lot of people heard them on a loop for several months.
You can probably tell if someone was a Sainsbury's staff member during that time because If you mention these songs they run screaming.
Source: a family member who worked there 🤣

cringingatchristmas · 15/12/2023 20:45

It was very big on Radio 1 (I think) about 15-20 years ago.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 18/12/2023 08:11

Chris Moyles is playing it now. It’s the first day of our school’s Christmas holidays, and now my kids are going wild 😂
