Please help me find coconut essence for my cake!

This stuff is literally like gold dust! None of the main supermarkets sell it. Waitrose sells it but it has really bad reviews saying it tastes awful, plus I’d have to drive 20 miles to Waitrose and they might not have it. Online stockists are charging like £7 a bottle - essence is normally only a couple of quid. I just want to make a cake! Any ideas where I can buy just a normal priced little bottle of coconut cake flavouring?

What do you need it for? I think it's quite easy to include coconut in most recipes so there's probably less demand for it. Quite a few of the baking websites seem to stock it for about £4/5 but you'd need to pay postage on it, amazon have one for £5. Essence usually tastes a bit fake though so normally I'd go for extract if I can get it. That might explain the bad reviews on the waitrose one.

Just realised you've said cake! Is it a specific recipe? Coconut cake is one of my favourites, never used an extract in it, there are lots of great recipes using dessicated coconut.

It’s a coconut cake recipe but it doesn’t have coconut in the actual cake. Just coconut flavouring. It’s an American recipe so maybe coconut extract is more widely available over there?

I do a lime and coconut cake, I use the solid part of a tin of coconut milk and some desiccated coconut, no need for essence.

SarahShorty · 15/12/2023 11:25

You put the lime in the coconut you drink it all up.

Sorry, the song is in my head.

Do you have any Asian food shops near you OP? That's where I found a wide selection of more unusual flavourings when looking for peppermint essence recently. (They didn't have peppermint in the end so I crushed some extra strong mints into powder and added them instead! So another vote for adding dessicated coconut as an alternative.)

Try an Asian food shop, ours always have it.

Ha, it’s always in my head when I make it!
