Guyana, the Commonwealth and war

I won’t link to the daily fail article but it was discussing the possibility of Britain going to war with Venezuela over the ownership of Guyana.

If we had a spare army do you think we’d go to war for one of the Commonwealth countries nowadays? Is it the same as 40 years ago and the Falklands or an entirely different prospect do you think? Would it depend on the value to Britain? Do we have a moral or written obligation or is it just a one sided marriage (the for richer part obviously)?

Interesting question. I'm astonished that Venezuela thinks it can afford such a stunt, given that it is now the poorest country in the Americas and has lost something like 20 per cent of its population. If the UK decides to send its own army, they are in for a shitfight in the jungle. I've been in that area: it is difficult terrain and very remote, and becomes impassable in wet weather. I feel sorry for anyone sent in to defend it.
