Recommendations for a basic recipe book?

DS is moving into his own flat and has asked for one. In my day we went for Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course. Is Delia still the one to go for, or can anyone recommend an equivalent?

I’d say Jamie Oliver ministry of food for basics!

Sarah Rossi's What's for Dinner is a good one. Easy, tasty and not too fancy/expensive.

What kind of food does your DS like?

PP suggestions are great, but maybe you can get a lot of the cookery basics online now? Perhaps a broad but cuisine specific option might work better?

I agree re. Jamie.

Delia is excellent but very methodical and may not suit everyone. Jamie is more casual, more grab a handful of this and chop a bunch of that, etc. Most of his recipes are very straightforward and tasty.

Not a classic but I have bought this for two separate teens recently: Do Yourself a Flavour by Fliss Freeborn.

Very very accessible, lots of things like: 6 things to do with 6 sausages, 5 things to do with potatoes and so on.

Recipe titles are a bit naff but there's a good whack of veggie options, some freezer meals and lots of budget ideas and variations
