Fortnum and Maisons or Aldi?

I went to F and M the other day and everything looked so beautiful. I was tempted by the tea and mince pies and hand made chocolates but then I thought us it just the packaging? When it comes to it is there that much of a difference?

F&M is proper nice.
Chocolate and macadamia cookies......

LubaLuca · 12/12/2023 13:36

There was one of those Channel 5 filler programs about this very recently. I didn't watch it, but presumably their rent-a-'celebs' said some things were nicer from Aldi and some were nicer from Fortnum & Mason.

I'd assume handmade chocolates were always going to be better than the mass produced things in any supermarket, but you pay your money and take your choice.

DancingDangerously · 12/12/2023 13:36

Yes of course there will be a difference.

Aldi is still pretty good though.

I have some of these put away in the cupboard for Christmas 😊

I’ve been invited out for Xmas day and I can go into F and M I suppose I’m sealing recommendations

F&M loose leaf tea is incredible, and I say that as an Aldi tea drinker 😂 It’s definitely way more expensive than supermarket/twinings but such a lovely treat if you fancy splurging on yourself

Lightbulbspark · 12/12/2023 14:04

Their Rose and Violet creams are delicious. I have tried other makes, but nothing comes close.

I watched this. It was interesting. I can’t remember but was it the Port that Aldi won on? I was impressed with the Aldi products that they tested (except for the smoked salmon)

LadyBird1973 · 12/12/2023 14:14

I really rate the Aldi mince pies - the ones that are mince tarts but mince pie size. F&M chocolate is gorgeous though. So I think a bit of both tbh. I'd get the stuff in F&M where you want it to look really beautiful

F&M fig chutney... Nothing beats it. I have bought some for DH's stocking and DS1s as they both love cheese.

Floralnomad · 12/12/2023 14:16

It depends on personal taste . It’s like the Asda tastes better then M &S - it doesn’t to me .

EachandEveryone · 12/12/2023 14:19

Chutney all sold out!

The packaging is gorgeous and part of it - perfect for gifts.

mince pies for yourself - iceland/Aldi/M&S all lovely

furtivetussling · 12/12/2023 14:21

I've only ever walked round F&M and goggled a bit at the prices. Never bought anything, but I would expect some things to be superb, and some to be pretty much of a muchness with Aldi or anywhere else.

OooPourUsACupLove · 12/12/2023 14:22

I was given an F&M hamper and yes, the food really is noticeable better. Currently absolutely amazed by the strawberry jam!

hby9628 · 12/12/2023 14:30

I got the F&M toffeelicious biscuits that people have mentioned on here before. Absolutely amazing. Not great for your teeth though

tuvamoodyson · 12/12/2023 14:34

I love F&M mince pies! I get them every year! They are best I’ve ever tasted…but I love the shop in general!

albaalba351 · 12/12/2023 14:45

Yes there is a large difference - the quality of the ingredients for Fortnum and Mason will be a lot better. Unfortunately cheaper brands are usually full of artificial preservatives. They also often bulk products out with bulking agents to make them need less ingredients.

Christmassy · 12/12/2023 14:47

Florentine's. The best anywhere, imo 🙂

kitsuneghost · 12/12/2023 14:49

There is a programme on this on channel 5
F+M won on smoked salmon
Aldi won on coffee
Sainsbury's won on Christmas pudding
Not sure what else they done as I was only half watching

Ilovemyshed · 12/12/2023 14:54

F&M is nice but buy wisely, alot of expensive packaging. Their marshmallows on the confectionary counter though .......

User9088 · 12/12/2023 14:54

The chocolates are very good! They're made by Audrey's in Hove if you live that way.

Cincinnatus · 12/12/2023 14:55

Yes it is very nice. Nothing else compares.

furtivetussling · 12/12/2023 15:01

I just think that if (say) a chocolate biscuit tastes absolutely delicious, then one costing four times as much can't possibly be four times more delicious.
