What are your thoughts on why the 23 COP28 has been held in the UAE?

Is this a deliberate choice? I am slowly beginning to think our world has really gone potty..

the political leaders of the world either know something we don’t about the Climate Crisis, or they really are evil, purely acting for capitalism.

I don’t know why it’s in the UAE except to point out that this is a global issue, not a national one. In theory, all countries should be involved in finding solutions, but in reality different countries have very different attitudes, priorities etc - as we are now seeing with the draft text discussions pretty much falling apart.

The only good thing that might come out of this is that the mask is officially off and we no longer have to pretend that we are ‘all in this together’ or that those of us living in the top 10% are remotely willing to give up our standards of living to address climate change or equality with other other 90% of humanity. Human nature is what it is.

and to answer your second para, I don’t think that political leaders know anything we don’t, and I don’t believe in ‘pure evil’.

Politicians do know what needs to be done, they just don’t know how to get re-elected after they’ve done it. Voters are not going to vote for anyone who actively promises to reduce living standards and make life less pleasant / convenient for the sake of some hypothetical event in the future.

BTW I think the fact that this is the only thread on COP28 on here, and you haven’t even had any replies, says a lot… there’s not a lot of faith in the process, or interest.
