What do you crave when hungover?

My friend and I were comparing hangovers on Saturday after a few drinks Friday. Our cravings were totally different!

Friend craved fried chicken and chips.
I craved salt and vinegar crisp, a bag of salad smothered with vinaigrette and, very specifically, those slightly spicy mini roasted peppers stuffed with ricotta 😂

Why do I not craze chicken and chips or a burger or the like, as well? Why do I crave vinegary stuff?

And what do you crave when hungover?

I have a few options:-

  1. hot Dorito salsa with tangy cheese Doritos tortilla chips, plus chocolate bar, loads of tea.
  2. ribena light ice cold, sausage and egg McMuffin, chocolate bar/crisps loads of tea.
  3. fry up, with something sweet loads of tea.

add painkillers.

McDonald’s breakfast and several cups of tea

Margo34 · 11/12/2023 09:44

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain of course, loads of tea. I can't seem to stomach a whole full cup though and it goes cold before I can finish it when hungover! 😔 Sacrilege!

I don’t think you’re wrong in what you crave, your body obviously craves vinegar when you’re hungover and your friend craves more fat, protein and carbs.

I recall speaking with a friend as to why I liked the Doritos salsa and she said it’s because your brain needs something sweet, I hadn’t thought of it that way.

Another cure but rarely used is salad for lunch, little to nothing to soak up alcohol and a smoothie (healthy).

I was quite upset in McDs the other day to find they’ve removed hash browns from their McMuffin brekkie menu!

😭

seem to recall diff cures for stages of life. DM used to cook fry ups for me and DB and fishfingers, oven chips and baked beans for us too - and our mates. Spoiled little brats we were!

SoRainbowRhythms · 11/12/2023 09:49

KFC - and I don't even eat meat 🤣

That's interesting, different cure at different ages/stages.

And now you say that, 10 years ago I remember craving super berry smoothies and breakfast wraps for hangovers

Sausage and egg McMuffin and a bottle of orange lucozade.

eandz13 · 11/12/2023 10:03

Lemonade
Those frozen fruity lemonade slush thingies that McDonald's sometimes have
Bacon butties
Fruit pastels/skittles

SallyWD · 11/12/2023 10:41

Really stodgy carbs and fat. Things like toasties, or fried egg sandwiches with lots of butter and cheese or cheesey chips. Always cheese! Lots of tea and coffee too.

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 11/12/2023 11:29

As a general rule I have a seriously sweet tooth.
if I’m hungover that changes completely, I want ALL the savoury things!
usually cheesy Doritos, some sort of fried chicken and those cheese things you put in the oven, along with full fat coke are the general go tos.

cardibach · 11/12/2023 11:34

Any manifestation of sugar, salt and fat with plenty of liquid! So sausage butty with orange juice and coffee for eg.
Later, Chinese takeaway.

PauliesWalnuts · 11/12/2023 11:35

I also have a really sweet tooth but on hangover days it's got to be a Gregg's sausage roll and ice cold can of Fanta.

dontforgetme · 11/12/2023 11:36

McDonald's breaky then I regret it and feel sick. I can't drink tea when I'm hungover either, the thought of milk turns my stomach. To be honest when I'm hungover it's game over and I wallow in self pity until it passes Grin

Diet Coke

Tighginn · 11/12/2023 11:38

Red ambulance.

gannett · 11/12/2023 11:40

Different solutions for different hangovers.

A savoury pastry usually hits the spot. Or fried halloumi or just a tube of Pringles.

Sometimes you need the full greasy fry-up. Sometimes, especially in the summer, you need fresh, hydrating things - my weirdest go-to for those ones is a cucumber. Just a cucumber, eaten like a chocolate bar. That's it. It works.

TM1979 · 11/12/2023 11:47

I have a few..
Something spicy from the Chinese.
A Big Mac
Fried egg on toast
Coke or lucozade

adriftabroad · 11/12/2023 11:50

I like a hair of the dog. Almost immediately. After cold, fizzy water.

With a really healthy fresh salad with cheese incorporated somehow.
OR
Scrambled eggs on brown toast.

Never fried stuff or hot drinks and definitely nothing sweet. I would be sick.

ThreeRingCircus · 11/12/2023 13:35

When I've got a really bad hangover I need ready salted crisps and a full fat coke to sip. Basically salt and sugar.

Verv · 11/12/2023 14:12

Sausage and egg McMuffin, or if nowhere near McD - Heinz tomato soup, irn bru and a bacon sandwich.

cristokitty · 11/12/2023 14:24

It's always something with bread. My preference is a roast veg and cheddar panini. I'll settle for cold slices of pizza.

Then usually chocolate milk but sometimes smoothies. I don't get hungover often but my DH knows it's bad when I break out the Nesquik.

ladygindiva · 11/12/2023 14:41

Lucozade and a full English breakfast pasty

Psychoticbreak · 11/12/2023 14:50

I dont get hangovers now but in my 20's it was (seriously) a turkey and potato salad sandwich on white bread. No butter.
