In agony with throat

I've posted this in health but posting here for traffic too as going out my mind.

I’m in agony. My throat is so red and swollen, my tonsils are almost touching and covered in white spots. Whenever I swallow it feels like I’m swallowing razor blades. My temp is now 39.2 and I can't stop shivering. I keep dribbling as it hurts to swallow and my ears keep clicking and my head is starting to hurt.

Other than paracetamol and throat sweets does any one have any suggestions on what to do for some relief tonight? I can't take ibuprofen as it's not recommended with another medication I'm taking. I'm absolutely miserable.

I'll be contacting my GP tomorrow, though we can only do this online so hopefully they think this warrants an appointment.

Thanks in advance

Gargle with warm, very salty water. And i mean VERY. Do not swallow it.

Force yourself to continue doing it every 15 min or so. Follow with cool water to drink.

I had such pain last year; you have my sympathies. You are going to need syrup with codeine.

LemonySippet · 10/12/2023 23:38

Call 111. I was in the same boat a week ago and was seen within an hour, diagnosed with tonsillitis and back home with a prescription for antibiotics within 2. I have NEVER felt so ill in all my life and they were nothing but kind to me.

LaurieStrode · 10/12/2023 23:38

Ps: I know it will be difficult but the salt water is a disinfectant. It really will help. Do it over the kitchen sink as you will gag.

Do you have ice cream, yoghurt or frozen fruit on hand?

Aspirin?

Dissolvable Asprin
and definitely get a GP appointment. Tonsillitis is miserable

Onthetipofmytonguetoo · 10/12/2023 23:57

It could be quinsy - I went through a period of having it every six to eight weeks and ending up in hospital on a drip each time. It resulted in me having to have my tonsils removed 12 years ago. I’d go downhill really fast and wouldn’t be able to swallow my own spit or breath properly.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/12/2023 00:08

Ring 111 now, don't mess around trying to get an appt tomorrow ,they might well just prescribe over the phone.

SuperDuperJezebel · 11/12/2023 00:25

I had something really similar earlier this year and I struggled all night with it, thinking I would try to go to the doctor in the morning... By the time it got to about 4am I realised I couldn't even swallow a mouthful of water and ended up going to a&e. It turned out to be a quinsy and I had to have IV antibiotics, IV pain relief, and IV fluids because I was so dehydrated. Easily the most sick I've ever felt in my life.

TinkerTiger · 11/12/2023 00:27

You'll need antibiotics for sure. I just sipped hot drinks non stop, lozenges weren't cutting it. I bought sachets of miso soup and drank a lot of those.

The good news is once you start antibiotics you should start feeling better within 24 hours

poppitypop1 · 11/12/2023 00:28

Difflam spray

TinkerTiger · 11/12/2023 00:29

Oh and gargling warm salt water should help a tad

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/12/2023 00:34

If you can't swallow saliva you need help now.
111 or a walk in centre.

SweatpantPotato · 11/12/2023 05:36

Sounds like strep or tonsillitis, I agree you should go in now. Look up the ingredients for "magic mouthwash" and when you pick up your antibiotics you can grab what you need, it's amazingly soothing.

TheIndecisiveElf · 11/12/2023 06:14

Definitely call 111 or head to A&E. I had this, was directed to A&E, thought that I'd be given antibiotics and sent back home but I'm on my second night in hospital as my infection is so severe.. Don't delay getting proper help.

GandalfTheWhite · 11/12/2023 06:22

Oh no that sounds awful! As somebody who has suffered with tonsillitis really really badly in the past I feel your pain.

Try gargling salt water as another poster said then call the doctors first thing, you need antibiotics. If you feel you can't wait til the doctors open and are really struggling call 111, they might tell you to go to hospital

HealthConcerns · 11/12/2023 11:19

Thank you all.

I'm still feeling terrible today. Did a 111 call last night but still haven't heard from them 🙄 have spoken to the GP at the surgery and have a prescription for antibiotics and have been told to go back if I'm no better by Wednesday as I should be feeling better by then.
