How old are you and have you always had these things in your house growing up?

Things like can opener, knife sharpener, potato peeler.

I'm late 30's but grew up in a different country and we didn't have these in my house until I was late teens. My grandparents in the countryside never had them. I learned at a very early age to just use a knife for all these things and I can do it well , so bar the potato peeler (and even that one took me a while) I just stick to what I know.

OH is early 50's and English so he always buys /uses these things . It's a thing in our house because he moans I make the knives blunt, but then sometimes sheepishly asks me to open a can for him if there's no pull ring and the can opener broke again. Grin

We were talking today and he said he always had these things growing up , so it made me wonder.

Riveting conversation... I know.

we've never owned a knife sharpener not even as a kid. but yes to a can opener and peeler

Yesterday I purchased a Norwegian cheese slicer 😂 the excitement is unreal

I'm 38!

ohtowinthelottery · 10/12/2023 16:19

I'm 59 and we had all those things when I was a child and I've had them all in my house since I left home 35 years ago.

furtivetussling · 10/12/2023 16:20

Yes to to others, but we never had a potato peeler, DM always used a sharp knife and taught me how to peel potatoes that way. I didn't buy one until I got married in the 80's.

We didn't have a pencil sharpener either, dad would sharpen pencils by whittling them with his penknife.

I'm mid 30s and we've always had all 3. Also an apple corer which DH recently found and was baffled by.

I'm always a bit embarrassed when I can't peel potatoes etc with a normal knife

BCBird · 10/12/2023 16:22

I'm.54. Never had potato peelers. I just use sa knife to.prep all veg including potatoes. People gave remarked on this in the past as if it's a special power😂

HeddaGarbled · 10/12/2023 16:23

You open cans with a knife?

DrunkenKoala · 10/12/2023 16:23

I’m 47 and we had those things in our house growing up and I’ve had them in various houses that I’ve lived in since leaving home.

Wednesday6 · 10/12/2023 16:24

I was growing up in USSR and we had these things..

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 10/12/2023 16:24

I'm 49 and grew up with can openers and potato peelers.

Never had, and don't have, a knife sharpener

PuttingDownRoots · 10/12/2023 16:25

Wouldn't you need a knife sharpener if you were constantly using knives? I mean kust the black sort, not anything fancy

Shodan · 10/12/2023 16:30

Yes we had all those things (I'm 55). We had a proper sharpening steel, rather than one of those things you draw the knife through.

But- I can also peel things efficiently with a knife, and sharpen pencils with one too. My first husband was a chef and helped improve my skills too.

AdoraBell · 10/12/2023 16:34

I’m 55 and growing up we only had a can opener.

I remember men used go to houses and sharpen knives for a small fee, my mother used a knife for peeling potatoes.

When I was 16 I moved out and that was the first time I had a veg peeler, didn’t have a knife sharpener until my late 20’s.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/12/2023 16:34

I’m 51. We never had a potato peeler growing up and my parents still object to them. I have bought them for them in the past and can never find them when I visit.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/12/2023 16:35

I like sharpening pencils with a knife because it reminds me of my grandad 🙂

Allmarbleslost · 10/12/2023 16:35

Never had a peeler or a knife sharpener. My DPs still don't have either now!

PaperDoIIs · 10/12/2023 16:35

HeddaGarbled · 10/12/2023 16:23

You open cans with a knife?

Yes. Everyone is horrified at the thought, but it's actually not that hard or as dangerous as it sounds.

We had them growing up. Since leaving home I’ve always had a can opener and a peeler, I’d see them as kitchen essentials. I’ve never owned a knife sharpener and never sharpened a knife before, I expect my knives are blunt by a lot of peoples standard but they do the job well enough for me and the amount of cooking prep I do.

You use a knife to sharpen the blunt knives.Grin

I’m 50. I had a potato peeler and a can opener. We used a service to sharpen our knives.

i bought a knife sharpener for the first time a couple of years ago. The local knife sharpening services have all disappeared. It’s not the same. The experts were much better and our knives were much sharper.

Floralnomad · 10/12/2023 16:39

I’m late 50s and we had all those growing up , and we have them in our home

Nonplusultra · 10/12/2023 16:40

In my house, growing up, we had a very basic can opener that is still going strong and my dm took her knives to the butcher to get sharpened.

I was fascinated the first time I saw a potato peeler. It was always a struggle to peel a potato thinly enough with a knife and a peeler is magical by comparison.

AdaColeman · 10/12/2023 16:40

When I was a child we had tin openers, including a large key type specially to open sardine tins. We used a steel for knife sharpening. We didn't have a potato peeler, we used a vegetable knife.

I've got tin openers, various exotic knife sharpeners, a range of sharp knives that I could probably perform surgery with as well as peel vegetables, but I've never owned a potato peeler.

RantyAnty · 10/12/2023 16:42

Think I had an electric can opening growing up but no potato peeler. We just used a sharp knife. Knives were sharpened with a whetstone.

I couldn't find an electric can opener when I moved overseas and hated using those hand crank ones so much. It made me stop buying tons of things.

PaperDoIIs · 10/12/2023 16:43

Hmmm...Maybe we were a lot more backwards than I thought. OH's memory is not the best so I doubted he actually had them as a child but it does to seem really common . Fair enough.

Yes we always had all of the things you’ve mentioned and it wouldn’t occur to me not to use them.
