I know there’s obviously loads but want to find one we can book rather than just turn up and hope for the best!

Any recommendations? Prefer things like Italian, steak, Mexican, Indian rather than seafood.

It’s for a group of six looking for good food and wine. Budget wise thinking 3 courses for £50pp ish but could stretch for good steak. Wine extra.

I was going to say Fish!, but maybe not if you're not keen on seafood.
Not too far away from Borough Market, and right on the river, is Swan at the Globe, which is consistently good and not too expensive.

Hawksmoor in Borough (their pre 6pm 3 course offer is great value), Gunpowder (Indian), Elliots (British small plates/grill), Jose Pizarro (tapas), el pastor or santo remedio (Mexican), Casse croute (French).

The ivy

DiscoStusMoonboots · 10/12/2023 16:38

I second Elliot's. The Garrison on Bermondsey Street also used to be good - haven't been for a while though so unsure as to now.

I would also recommend The Swan Inn at The Globe Theatre overlooking the Thames. Book the first floor or higher to get the views. It's a lovely walk from London Bridge station too - 10 mins.

Changedmymind99 · 10/12/2023 16:47

Hawksmoor for steak and I second fish too.

There is a great take out Empanada place (or should be anyways) across from the market porter pub.

Monmouth for a Take out coffee.

Bedales wine bar for cheese and wine.

Rambutan - different and amazing.

Slidingsocks · 10/12/2023 17:13

Roast in Borough Market. Great food and atmosphere in the heart of the market.

Torganer · 10/12/2023 17:20

Hawkesmoor is pretty much the same everywhere. Their steaks are no better than Blacklock and the Borough outpost isn’t anything special visually (not like the Guildhall or Aire St). El Pastor is great for Mexican and buzzy. If you want a bit of fun, there is a traditional Italian by the Kings Head, down in the basement. They have live music at the weekend.

Flat Iron on Tooley Street

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/12/2023 17:34

How about Brindisa?

We like TAS but probably not posh enough for special dinner.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/12/2023 17:37

There are a number of new places in the newish Borough Yards development that might be worth checking. Not been to any so can't comment on price/food quality.

I was going to say that.. it’s walk-in only BUT you can queue virtually and go for a drink while you wait - it is SO good.

Berenjak - Persian - never will you think of a kebab in the same way

Casa do Frango - posh Nandos

Tacos Padre - informal and delicious Mexican. Only open back end of the week.

casse croute - Tiny lovely French place

turnips - under the arches so it feels a bit rough and ready - modern British farm to fork / small taster plates of food from the market

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2023 17:54

I’d skip hawkesmoor and the Ivy bistro - bit because they aren’t fine, but because they are all over london and not that interesting

ondaytwothousand · 10/12/2023 18:30

Lobos used to be great for tapas - great cocktails, but more casual dining.

icecreamisforwintertoo · 10/12/2023 19:16

Bar Douro is great, Portuguese food. It’s small and cosy - good food and service

bananamangoes · 10/12/2023 19:22

Black n blue for steaks

Yes! Second this

Vinoteca - delicious food and wine and menus sounds like what you are looking for. And it’s in Borough Market

Noleafclover1 · 10/12/2023 19:25

Andanza just off Weston St - fantastic Basque tapas, great wines too.

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 10/12/2023 19:25

The Boot and Flogger is an old school wine bar which does good food and wine - it has a lovely Dickensian vibe, which is nice this time of year.

Ooh yes. Absolutely beautiful pasta and wine by the carafe

Torganer · 10/12/2023 19:45

Definitely pop to the Boot and Flogger for a wine, or white port and tonic! I also recommend Bar Douro, there is one at Liverpool St too, but it’s a bit of a walk from the market so depends on whether you wanted something more in Borough Market. Padella is more cheap and cheerful, so you wouldn’t really linger there. Had the worst steak ever in Black and Blue, I wouldn’t recommend.

Massivescreen · 10/12/2023 19:45

Roast is gorgeous - probably the best roast I’ve ever had. Not cheap though!
