Exceeding Secret Santa budget because one gift is a re-gidt

and so didn't actually cost me anything.

I dont want to just give the regift as it hasn't cost me anything but in itself, it's about the SS limit, so want to buy something too but then it's obviously over the limit.

But, the person concerned would absolutely love it but I don't know them well enough and it would be weird just to give it to them.

What would you do please?

I have had the same dilemma. Things are a bit tighter this year financially so I'm more comfortable just giving the re gift, though I do feel a bit bad still. But it doesn't make sense to give more than the fair value as it breaks the rules so is unfair.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/12/2023 17:46

Stop hand wringing. Either wrap up the regift and give them just that, if you know it's something they will like, or buy them something they will like and regift the other thing to someone who would want it. Don't just waste money and summon more useless rubbish into the world for this bizarrely convoluted train of thought. Secret Santa isn't supposed to work like that at all.

SS needs to at least appear to be within limit, or the whole thing breaks down

Just give them the other thing separately

Just give the re-gift, no one will know .... unless it was the year my SS gift was a diary ... for the previous year ... I still smiled and said thank you graciously.

Pineapplewaves · 09/12/2023 18:20

How would the recipient know it's a re-gift? Unless you won it at the same secret Santa last year? Just give them the gift and be happy you saved some money. Don't stress over a second Santa gift for someone you hardly know.

It has cost you something though, it was a gift given to you but you are now losing that gift by giving it away, if you see what I mean.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 09/12/2023 18:22

If the registration is the right value, just give that. Unless it's really obvious you're passing it on.

GreatGateauxsby · 09/12/2023 18:25

🥴 Massively overthinking it

Just give the regift...

Eeepsh · 09/12/2023 18:56

Ok, thank you - I am massively overthinking - I'll give them the regift and then stick a tenner in a charity box to salve my conscience.

Hope I get a decent gift after all this 😂
