Can you request a cholesterol test at the GP?

Random one. I want to get my cholesterol checked, I’ve just been told my teen has elevated cholesterol and the letter says it could be heredity and I have to answers questions about family history. But this could also be from his fathers side (we aren’t together). I also don’t know my father to know if there’s a link. My mother does have age, diet & weight related cholesterol issues.

I believe I last had mine checked about 4 or 5 years ago. At the time I was going through a lot of stress which made me unwell and my Bp shot up so had blood tests to rule anything out and all came back fine!

I am in my thirties, am about 2-3 stone overweight but none smoker and drinker. I’m not sure if I can randomly ask for one?

or should I just pay for a home test to send off?

Most pharmacies can check it.

I get mine tested at the GP. I'm pretty sure you can request one.

I requested one a couple of weeks ago and they did it no problem.
But I was having a diabetes review and had some symptoms of high cholesterol, so it wasn't completely random.

Notmetoo · 09/12/2023 17:24

Thanks all. Yes you can get them from boots however the reviews aren’t great so I’m not sure what to do!

I work in a gp surgery and yes you can, in fact in your case I'd have asked you to come in for a BT.

Given the situation with your dd the doctor should do it if you explain.

Pigeonqueen · 09/12/2023 18:46

(My dd also has high cholesterol - 7.5- she is 20, vegetarian and a size 8 at 5ft 10 so they suspected it was genetic but did all the various tests and they reckon it’s just one of those odd things - I got mine done and it’s 3.5, I’m 5ft 6, 15 stone and 43 years old and I eat pretty badly to be honest. Very strange. They’re just monitoring my dd, haven’t put her on anything for it as they said at her age she doesn’t need it).

I agree, I also work in a GP surgery and yes, with good reason a blood test would be no problem.

You may need to show a copy of your DCs letter first.

Thanks all. I have had it checked before and it was fine, so it’s unlikely I have a genetic cause however my diet isn’t the best and am overweight. However, it could be on his fathers side so who knows! I still want to get mine checked though!
