If your baby was 99th percentile - did they become big / tall as they grew up?

I don't care by the way I’m just curious!

my baby is 5.5 months and 99th percentile for weight and probably height but haven’t measured that! She is as big as some 1 year olds 😂

I was 6 weeks premature so not a good comparison but her Dad was a chubby baby apparently… we’re both slim and 5ft 6 / 5ft 11!

We both have short and tall genes in our family though, so she could end up being tall I suppose I just wonder if there’s any correlation?!

Mine was 98th for ages. Not the tallest in his class at all it started averaging out around age 4

Soggydog · 09/12/2023 15:00

I had a really chubby baby with rolls and dimples who is now one of the tallest in the year and skinny as a rake.

snatchabook · 09/12/2023 15:01

My friend's son was 99th and he's still very tall now at 6, but then so are his parents.

My eldest was 85th but is now small for his age at 5, youngest in the 90s and smallish for his age at 2. But their dad is on the short side and I'm not tall.

My babies were born very heavy and tall. All girls.

I am very short, DH very tall.

One is average at 5'5", the others 5'6" / 5'7"

MIL and SIL are 5'10" so in they're not tall in DH family 🤣

Soggydog · 09/12/2023 15:02

But I also had one under 25th centile who is also very tall so no correlation here

MinnieMotor · 09/12/2023 15:02

He's just turned 18 and 6'4". No one in our family is over 6'1".

theduchessofspork · 09/12/2023 15:02

My niece was a very tall baby a really small adult

Temporaryname158 · 09/12/2023 15:03

No correlation, my 8th percentile child is now the tallest in the class!

Singleandproud · 09/12/2023 15:03

Yep DD was tallest in her class by head and shoulders and stopped growing age 13 at 5 ft 10.

Only down sides to her being tall was people assuming she was much older than she was, inappropriate comments about her figure as a young tween made by older teens as she looked more 15 than 11 ( not that that makes it any better) and having Severs Disease.

If your child ever complains about pain in their feet Severs Disease is very common in tall children, they grow out if it but it's where the growth plates/muscles etc in the feet and lower legs are out of kilter and can cause alot of pain during and after growth spurts.

Cathpot · 09/12/2023 15:04

We did that thing where you measure their length and then times it up a few times- can’t remember exactly- to get future height when DD was little and it came out as pretty tall and we promptly dismissed it as we are both average height. Anyway she is now a lovely 5 foot 10 woman which is I think is about what was predicted. She has some properly tall relatives on her dad’s side so I guess that’s where it’s come from. Other daughter is about 5 foot 6ish so more like my side.

WASZPy · 09/12/2023 15:04

My 99th centile baby is now 6ft at 13.

jayhoo · 09/12/2023 15:04

All three of mine were 10lbs plus, 99th percentile, now 6'2, 6'1 and 6'3, last two are still growing 😳 I'm 5'9, dads 6'3

BurntOrangeAutumn · 09/12/2023 15:05

Yes so far, my 11 year old daughter is 5ft 6ish & still growing

goodgriefsean · 09/12/2023 15:06

DD was around the 95th I think, she's now 9 and in age 12 clothing, size 3 shoe.
DH is 6ft I'm 5'6".

LycheeBaby · 09/12/2023 15:06

99th centipede for height and 60th for weight. Now a slim 6’2” so pretty similar. I think parents’ height is the best indicator though.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 09/12/2023 15:07

DD was generally around the 95th - 99th line until she was about 2. Then she had a year of not growing to the extent we were being referred in case there was a problem. Then she has a growth spurt and was one of the taller girls in her class throughout primary. She's now yr9
& many of her friends are taller. She's also slim & muscly.

oneproudmumma · 09/12/2023 15:10

Both my DDs have remained on the same centiles since birth. One is 75th and the other 95-98, for weight and height.

Favouritefruits · 09/12/2023 15:11

My youngest was a huge baby he’s now 6 and under the school nurse because he’s so thin! He’s very tall but you can see every rib and he’s got a six pack but it’s coz he’s so skinny! He looks awful, it’s like he put on loads of weight until he was 18months then just stretched out! He’s now 2stone 3 but 117cm!

Shrammed · 09/12/2023 15:12

Large birth weight - went down centiles - then in toddler years sometimes high centiles for height - again throughout school years sometime average sometimes very tall for age.

We have mix of tall and small people in genetic mix - kids now teens girls slightly taller than average - round mine and DH height - DS smaller than average - again round our height - though I suppose at 16 could still grow.

Caspianberg · 09/12/2023 15:13

Ds was 99%+ for heights and weight born. Now at 3.5 years he’s still very tall, but slimmed right down and slightly underweight as fussy eater. Dh is tall though also

MrsAvocet · 09/12/2023 15:15

My babies' birthweights varied enormously, ranging from under 2nd to over 90th centile. They are all adults now, and all between 9th and 25th centile which is exactly what you'd expect from my and DH's heights.
There was a phase when people thought that teeny DC2 and massive DC3 were twins even though there's over 2 years between them, so I saw a paediatrician as I was concerned. She explained that initial size is strongly influenced by the intrauterine environment. I had pre eclampsia and hyperemesis with DCs 1&2 but not DC3 which was probably a big factor. Not quite sure why DC3 was quite so big - I do sometimes wonder if I had undiagnosed gestational diabetes or something. Then she said that ultimate height was more related to genetic factors and that they would likely even out in time. Which is exactly what did happen. My tiny babies exhibited "catch up" growth and DC3 "caught down" and they have all ended up very similar, and also very much like their cousins on my side of the family. I don't think you can really say for sure at this stage.

DelphiniumBlue · 09/12/2023 15:16

Yes, DS1 was on 99th and is 6’3 now and 20 stone size 13 shoes.
He was always a head taller than his classmates, but a few did eventually catch up with him.
He was born at 36 weeks, just over 7lbs.

DiaNaranja · 09/12/2023 15:20

My eldest was off the centile chart by 6 months, so had to go under paediatrics. She's now 9, and absolutely tiny, smallest in her class, and probably not on the centiles the other way now! Me and her dad are small though so I did always think she wouldn't stay massive, and would even out at some point. She was a chubby toddler, but by the time she started school she was average to small, and now she's dinky.

Theseventhmagpie · 09/12/2023 15:25

DS was 99th percentile all through childhood. I’m a small build 5’4”, DH is large build 6’3” (and yes, giving birth nearly killed me 😟). DS is 17 and 6’1” and now looks unlikely to be as tall as DH- for which I get the blame!

Angrymum22 · 09/12/2023 15:28

DS was between 91st and 98th centiles height throughout childhood but only around 50th for weight. He is now 19, 187.5cm ish and 87kg with slim but muscular build. So still between 91st and 98th centiles.
He's very sporty so when training can eat 4000-6000 calories a day. At the moment he is recovering from shoulder surgery so is eating much less. He was bf until 2 and still only eats when hungry.
