Redundancy worries……..

Redundancies are on the horizon in my workplace. Rumour has it there are enough people interested in voluntary redundancy but this is all just heard on the grapevine. So I’ve heard, compulsory is a last resort but we won’t know for another few months. They need several people to go.

I really enjoy my job and naturally anxious about losing it. I am in a vulnerable position as I have been there slightly less than 2 years so no employment rights AFAIK until that point is reached. Not sure whether LIFO is a selection criterion they can use if it comes to it.

Has anyone been in this situation before and what was the outcome?

Company i worked for made people redundant for the majority of my working life, except when i wanted to go. If you havent been there long you might be relatively cheap. They are likely to want to get rid of the more expensive workers.

Many people found that being made redundant was the best thing that ever happened to them. You cant do much about it at the moment, except for making sure your CV is up to date and maintaining good work ethic.

I hope it will be fine but I guess we are all in the same situation

I was given notice of redundancy last week after 15 years. It is a bit scary, but I’m seeing it as an opportunity too. Unfortunately, all the worrying in the world won’t change the outcome. Like you, I heard rumours, but in the end, they were just that. We had to re-apply for our own jobs (they’d cut down the number) and I didn’t get one.

I hope things work out for you. It’s unsettling and maybe especially so at this time of year.

I was made redundant (compulsory) at the beginning of this year after 20 years in the same job. I got s fairly decent package, which helped obviously. I had help from my old employer to get a cv sorted, along with a few job coach sessions which were worth taking advantage of. I got a new job within a month of leaving and although its a temporary contract I'm enjoying it and my contract has been extended. It's been the best thing to happen to me and I'm so much happier. Embrace the change, its scary but so much can happen that you may not have done otherwise. Good luck!

I’ve been made redundant a couple
of times when businesses have been sold. It’s always worked out fine - reasonable redundancy pay off and managed to
straight away get a new role by networking with former colleagues etc. Maybe make sure your CV and LinkedIn are up to date but in no way panic.

They have said decisions won’t be made until the end of the financial year but it’s all so uncertain isn’t it. I’m sorry to hear of your situation, and hope you get sorted soon. It’s rubbish
