Mental health awful since coming off the pill?

Sorry this is in Chat - I didn't know where it fitted!

I'm 44. I was told I was too old for the pill so in May I had a Mirena coil put in (which has been awful and painful, but that's another thread).

My mental health has always been really robust, but it's steadily declined this year. I had a significant bereavement in March and I have a very very stressful job (and teenagers!) so I just put it down to that but it's got to the point where I just don't feel like myself any more. I get waves of anxiety, my body feels tense all the time, I cry every day, I get so angry at so many things...

Could this be hormonal?

I'd be pointing the finger at the Mirena coil. I had an awful time with one a few years ago.

That's interesting - did you feel similar?

Get that coil out and go on the pill. Don't believe the rubbish about you being too old for it. I had the same argument when I was your age and point blank refused the coil they wanted me to have. I've been on desogestrel (the mini pill) ever since, no periods since I started it and I'm now 52. Apparently I can take it until I'm 55.

It was a while ago, I remember feeling physically unwell for sure. I have long standing MH issues so any difficulties tend to be blamed on that by doctors rather than considering if something else has upset the balance.

It was a bloody nightmare getting them to remove it. I got pressganged by a group of nurses giving me a hard time and refusing to do it because what was I going to do for contraception otherwise. I was a 35yr old mother in a committed relationship fgs! Totally unacceptable to try and take away my right to decide what happens to my body.

I've had the same problem with hormonal contraceptives, fine on the combined pill but anything else turns me into a person I don't even recognise.

As someone has said it's hard work getting them to remove your coil, I have the copper one now but my Dp has had the snip so I no longer need it but it's proving impossible to get it removed.

GP said I could have it out but I haven't actually tried to make an appointment for it yet. Can't believe women have to fight for this

Is the mini pill just progesterone? I feel like I need my oestrogen back!
