(Food?) Gift ideas for hostess

DC and I are visiting a friend between Christmas and New Year, staying overnight for 1 night. I'd like to bring a little gift to say thank you for hosting us; I was thinking some kind of treat-food from Waitrose or M&S or somewhere. I'm normally an Aldi girl (she definitely isn't!) so I'm not familiar with what's good / appropriate from a "nicer" shop. Any recommendations? Doesn't have to be food if you have a different suggestion!

If you are expecting to be fed and drink wine, I’d take a bottle of white and red. And perhaps a nice box of biccies from M&S.

I would take either a bottle of wine or if they don’t drink (or if they are picky about wines) then a long shelf life food item. Everyone has too much food this time of year so giving something that can be eaten later is nice. Chutney, tin of crackers, or a bottle of Baileys of they like that. Tea is also a nice gift if they like a variety of teas or have regular guests.

Does she have any allergies?

I'd go for
really nice chocolates
Chocolate florentines
Nice biscuits for cheese - Peters Yard are good

I also often take a hyacinth/crocus basket - it provides some colour and interest after the Christmas decorations have come down - I don't take it to anyone who suffers from hayfever. An alternative is to order a low- allergy arrangement (mostly attractive foliage/decorative cabbage etc) for the end of your visit.
