It's not Christmas until...

... I've got my chops around the first mince pie 🥧

Finally got some from M&S this morning, (their mini ones, and the Costco ones are the only ones I like) so am going to have one later on, with a cuppa.

What specifically says Christmas to you?
And whilst we're on the subject - are you a mince pie lover or hater?
Which ones are your favourite?
Are homemade much better than shop bought?

Until I clean the house before Christmas. It’s proper tip now, so I can’t even look at it and definitely don’t feel christmassy even though tree is up.

When I hear 'Wonderful Christmas Time' by Paul McCartney & Wings on the radio. It's Dad's favourite Christmas song too so we always immediately let each other know the first time we hear it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/12/2023 14:18

I make my own MPs too, with Delia’s mincemeat, but not before 1st December. Feeling fairly Christmassy now since the tree is up (early for us but Gdcs coming for the weekend), and lots of carols playing on Classic. But I won’t really feel it’s Christmas until the first notes of Once In Royal David’s City - Chr. Eve Carols from King’s. 🎄

catscalledbeanz · 08/12/2023 14:37

For me it's when the tree is up and a glass of port drunk. I only like the iced mince pies (yes I'm like a child) or the Costco ones. I'm a Christmas fan and love the extended season. Basically from dec through to Jan 8th it's Christmas is this house. And despite this it's never ever not special. Always my favourite time of year.

For me it's when we have the Goldfish crackers, it's our family tradition 😋

I like the Tesco finest Mince Pies with rum.
It's not Xmas until we have picked the very last online order, then we get to celebrate.
The relief is immense as such a busy time.

Not Christmas here til the tree is up🎄 which hopefully will be this weekend, the special Radio Times is in the house,( out on Tuesday, I think?) and the food shopping is safely in the fridge-freezer!
But if I’m really honest, it’s the afternoon of Christmas Eve when it’s too late to buy anything you “might” need, everyone is home safely and the food, presents etc are all done. Love Christmas Eve evening, that cosy feeling, tree all lit up, the best part of it all🎅

It's not Christmas until the night shift workers start messaging to see if they can swap shifts.

No one is allowed to take Christmas Day off, so we all work - some work four hours, others have to work a full shift (like the Nighties), so Nighties try to swap for a 4 hour day shift instead...

are you in health care?
I fondly ( not ) remember the days of the Xmas off duty and the tears and tantrums

I've bought the Christmas Radio Times. I look through it once, fail to do the picture quiz and then it gets ignored until new year when it gets recycled. I can't not buy it though, it's tradition!

Oh thank goodness it's not just me

Tho I also mutter I could buy a book for the price

sprigatito · 08/12/2023 16:09

...until my gorgeous dotty Dad turns up on the 20th. He's 83 and will throw himself into craft projects, wreath-making and general Christmassiness like a small child. I love seeing him up to his ears in glue/glitter/bits of wood/whatever, completely engrossed and snarling at anyone who tries to rush him. We nearly lost him to cancer four years ago and every moment is gold, Alzheimer's be damned...we know it's going to get trickier, but he's just so fab ❤️

It's not Christmas until the London International Horse Show is on and the audience are singing the First Noel while Santa is taken round the arena on a horse drawn sleigh at the end of the evening.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/12/2023 16:58

Its Xmas when Home Alone comes on

marriednotdead · 08/12/2023 17:25

For me it's hearing Greg Lake on the radio. Bonus if I'm in the car, double bonus if I'm with my lovely sister when it comes on as it did this year 🥰

MrsTulip · 08/12/2023 18:29

For me it's when the little girl I'm 1:1 SEN TA for starts singing Christmas songs and the Baileys goes on offer in the supermarket -so today it is!

On a more serious note it's usually once I've come home from taking the 4pm Christmas Eve church service and we've had food (pizza and ice cream at my 9 year olds request this year)
