Been sold terrible WiFi contract

I’ve had data for years instead of WiFi. Last week I phoned BT broadband to ask about their WIFI deals. They said because my sim is with EE they will do me a deal from there and I was sold a contract that day for £30/48 months set to increase. Except the speed is 20mbps which I have found out is slow. When I agreed to it I didn’t know about WiFi. I haven’t used it haven’t got the hub yet. The person did say I had a cooling off period but would it be possible to get another faster deal through the same hub or do I really have to get that hub sent back. How do I cancel this terrible deal

As it hasn’t started yet, because you don’t have the hub installed and haven’t used any WiFi, you have the right to cancel it and get a full refund of anything you might have already paid. I would call them first thing tomorrow. Before you cancel, double check the speed, the slowest packages are usually at least 132MBps for £25/mo?

I would not let them sell you a faster deal if the price and speed are correct. We pay £35 per month for 362MBps on a 12 month contract. Do a bit of comparison checking online and see who offers the best rates for your post code.

No the speed is actually 20mbps. I cant believe they’ve ripped me off so much

Why on earth didn't you spend 15 minutes googling the basics about broadband before you committed to a package?

It's a bit unfair to blame the provider when you were the one who bought it. They likely thought the deal you bought would be ok for you... considering you agreed to it.

This sort of helplessness is so infuriating. I hate people who blame everyone else but themselves when the answers are at their fingertips!

You mean WiFi. All internet in homes is via WiFi hubs/routers these days. The WiFi hubs do come with ports to have wired internet to certain devices- ie some smart TVs work better when wired to the hub than if streaming over WiFi.

20MBps for £30/mo is a rip off, in that case, cancel tomorrow and take your business elsewhere as that is not trustworthy behaviour for them to have sold such a package to you.

And the OP is talking about internet speed, not WiFi. Sounds like you were better off with your previous data connection.

I didn't even know they did 4 year contracts. It's a bit unwise to sign up for that long unless they're offering you the deal of the century, which this clearly isn't.

Obviously you should cancel within your cooling off period !

Today, if you’re not happy.

Just phone them and say you’ve changed your mind.

Then do some research on WiFi speeds/ deals and go from there.

Before our village was fibre cabled , the maximum we could get was about 3Mbps because that is all the local infrastructure could handle. And that was into early this year. could be that 20 is the maximum possible.

Ok. 20 mbps is quite slow but not a disaster. It should be enough to browse online, watch Netflix, take a Teams call. If you have multiple devices connected or a gamer in the house then you will struggle.

It sounds as if you have FTTC so you won't get anything much better than 70 mbps at most.

The also cost sounds a bit toppy. I pay £25 pm for 150 mbps and TV.

If you are not happy then call and cancel the contracr asap, but as people said have a think about what you actually want and need and investigate what is available. Fixed broadband is better than tethering your phone as you can run TV, laptops, tablets, connected household items, phones etc.. off it and is more reliable, especially if you use an ethernet cable.

WiFi packages are priced and sold based on internet speed. 20MBps will be noticeably slow and any sort of streaming will have freezes while it buffers.

OP was using her phone, which means 4G or 5G.

Both of those are much much faster than 20MBps as on average 4G ranges from 40MBps to 55MBps and 5G ranges from 65MBps to 75MBps
