2/4 player board game - different needs

KatyMac · 07/12/2023 11:00

I like scrabble, Catan, boggle, Baker Street & suduko
DH like Twister and giant Jenga boggle & card games
DD likes Catan, Chess, Scrabble & card games
DDFiancee Likes Catan, computer games, Monopoly, payday chess & risk

So we need a new board game - an extension pack for Catan is a possibility but we haven;t exhausted the scenarios on the 2 we have so maybe for next year

What can we get this year

Herd mentality or Payday are possiblities but as DD & her DF are mid twenties they might be too young for us

Any suggestions?

Ticket to ride is good fun

Also dungeon! was a big hit (cut down dungeons and dragons), both of these might be a bit young.

Yahtzee, Monopoly deal and exploding kittens are great short games.

League of lexicon is a great games for those who love language.

Cards against humanity if you're ready for intergenerational sweary/rude/very adult/ and potty humour

Then there is always trivial pursuit, there's a new version out which looks good.

There are also some great escape room type games.

The Crew - The Quest for Planet 9. It's a co-operative card game which you play together to try to achieve a series of goals It's actually more fun than I just made it sound and gets quite challenging a it goes on.

Or if you prefer competitive games - Kingdomino. Despite being pretty simple to learn it's endlessly replayable.

Go on many planet-discovering space missions in this cooperative trick-taking game.

We like OK Play - a very simple game, but once you get into it, it becomes very tactical (removing tiles, blocking players etc). It works really well for 4 players but not as good for 2 or 3.

MrsFionaCharming · 07/12/2023 11:37

I’m currently addicted to Azul.

I’d also recommend Ticket to Ride Europe.

KatBurglar · 07/12/2023 11:42

Ticket To Ride Europe definitely shows up who didn’t pay attention in primary school geography 😂 We have a broad range of ages and everyone enjoys it.

I don’t think Herd Mentality is a young game, it’s an everyone game. Just One is sort of the reverse, and even better.

Frenchfancy · 07/12/2023 11:50

Seven wonders might fit the bill. Worth watching a YouTube video to work out how to play as it is a different mechanism to traditional games, but it is played with cards and involves strategy.

Seeline · 07/12/2023 11:55

For quick games we like Uno. Recently discovered Uno Flip which is a great variation. And SkipBo is fun too.

Currently looking for a new board game too for us and DCs (young 20's).

Boardgamegeek.com is a good resource. See if you fancy the look of:

Nusfjord

For a short silly game, King of Tokyo

Ticket to Ride
Perudo

Might not be up your street, but we enjoy Colour Brain and Pictures too.

We ended up on Big Potato Games on YouTube

"Don't say umm" is a definite possibility

Still choosing

Pandamonium - similar tile placement to Catan but you have to feed pandas

PandaG · 07/12/2023 15:29

Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride, Azul, Alhambra, Cascadia, Thurn und Taxis, Century Spice Road all a similar weight game to Settlers.

Linkee more of a quiz game but good fun
Camel Up is lightweight, you bet on the outcome of a camel race which is determined by the roll of dice. You can try to work out probability but it can be down to luck... The maths teacher and maths graduates in our gaming circle are no more likely to win than me!

ODFOx · 07/12/2023 15:39

5 second rule. The questions aren't hard but spitting them out in 5 seconds is. Plus the timer makes a satisfying BOIIINNNGG! sound 😀.

KatyMac · 12/02/2024 07:51

We got "don't say Umm" which we love, "chameleon" which is fabulous and "don't get got"

And are still enjoying them!

Thanks all

Perudo
Has dice instead of cards, bluffing, calculation, memory. Simple rules but complicated tactics.
Based on the likes you've listed there should be something for each of you in Perudo.

Chemenger · 12/02/2024 11:15

I second The Crew, we really enjoyed it at Christmas. It works best with 4, it’s harder with three players.
Ticket to Ride is always fun. Where is Moldova is also quite popular, especially for geography nerds.
