Every winter I get ill 🤒 😷 but not just once I get coughs , colds, viruses, I practically find myself ill Every 3 weeks. It's so depressing
How do I prevent this from happening next year? I have been taking vitamin D every day without fails since September but I don't think this had actually done anything!!
What do you do that prevents you from falling ill constantly in the winter!

No idea
lots have more complex issues health wise to deal with

PeacheyPeach · 07/12/2023 15:40

@Nsky62 what a ridiculous reply

@PeacheyPeach Do you take Vitamin D in the winter, most of us in the UK would benefit from it? Also consider a probiotic and get your iron and ferritin levels checked with your GP if possible.

Ensuring good sleep, staying active and a healthy diet will help boost your immune system. I also find a humidifier helps but obviously not every home is idea to run one in.

I have an ongoing chronic illness but of course when you keep getting hit with one virus after another, that would be miserable for anyone!

PeacheyPeach · 07/12/2023 17:39

@thedividedelf hey there sorry to hear that you have ongoing chronic illness, that must get you down, thank you for your helpful reply though xx
I started taking Vitamjn D daily since September as I thought I'd give myself a headstart but feel like it's not done anything as I've been hit with illness past few months which is what happens every winter 😅

I've had a few years like that myself and so have lots of people, I don't know if its to do with covid messing with our immune systems?

DoThePropeller · 07/12/2023 17:45

I think the average child gets 8-12 colds per season and I have three children so end up basically poorly from September to March. Have autoimmune thing that doesn’t help.

I try and get sun in both October and Feb school breaks which helps albeit an expensive treatment!

PeacheyPeach · 08/12/2023 20:11

@DoThePropeller yes I think having children at school is what brings the germs home with a vengeance 😅
Do you find the winter holidays help you, I really want to book for winter sun but would be fearful of being sick when I was supposed to be going away!!
Were do you head to for some sun!?

OP posts:
DoThePropeller · 08/12/2023 21:34

I usually do Southern Spain in October and Dubai or Caribbean in Feb. I do find it helps. We have had illness around the trip, including one kid with pneumonia just before our last one but we were ok to fly and it helped recovery - meant a very quiet week though with no real going out but we didn’t mind.

PeacheyPeach · 09/12/2023 12:26

@DoThePropeller I have been thinking about forgoing our summer holiday and actually booking somewhere later in October for next year as I feel we need a good vitamin d boost before the winter kicks in!!

OP posts:
greengreengrass25 · 09/12/2023 12:28

I sometimes take Sambucol to boost my immunity

I know exactly what you mean OP

EdgarsTale · 09/12/2023 12:31

I take very high dose vitamin C, Zinc & echinacea. I haven’t been ill at all this winter.

PeacheyPeach · 09/12/2023 18:38

@greengreengrass25 & @EdgarsTale I think I need to improve my vitamin intake, I thought the vitamin d was going to be enough but obviously not!

MissBubbla · 11/12/2023 16:33

I was like you. Every winter without fail I'd be bunged up, bed ridden & voiceless from November to February, just sick.

January this year I said no more. Got my bloods done lo and behold I was low in iron & vitamin D, also asked my mum what she used to do to keep me healthy when I was younger.

I bought a high strength multivitamin (I like vitabiotics), super high dose iron tablet (get it from the pharmacy), ate beef & had chicken broth 2x a week, had an egg everyday, super high dose vitamin D 50,000iu once a week for 5 weeks, then 20,000iu 2x a week for the past 11 months. 1000-4000mg VitC (everyday depends how I'm feeling), added extra zinc, VitA & fish oil.
If I feel a sniffle I take extra vitC & VitD & the next day it's gone.
Eat ginger & a clove of garlic every other day, (no you won't smell, its great for heart disease, pain relief & immune health.
My nails have gone back to looking like acrylics & my hair growth is tremendous, skin glows, no common cold or flu has caught me out yet (crosses fingers, touches wood)

Watch Dr Berg, get as much uninterrupted sleep as possible & drink 1.5l of water every day to help your liver process the supplements.

This was longer than I wanted it to be, sorry 🤣

Firefly2009 · 11/12/2023 16:50

I make a chicken stew with plenty of onion, garlic, leeks plus whatever other vegetables I happen to like

Drink hot lemon and honey plus often a herbal tea bag added. If you can get through 2 lemons a week you're doing well

Drink orange juice and even more grapefruit juice

These have been my foolproof ways of recovering from bad colds and infections. Then I realised that prevention is better than cure. Taking multi vitamins and minerals also helps. Some people swear by echinacea; you can also get it in herbal tea.

piscofrisco · 11/12/2023 16:56

I am the same op. This year has been especially bad. Had Covid at Easter and not been right since. Currently
Have it again!! Bastard thing.
Reading with interest. I already take iron (am going to increase), magnesium, fish oils and eat two eggs plus lots of other protein every day. And drink lots of water. I've recently started taking vitamin d every day and fluorodix liquid which has loads of vitamins and such. I eat alot of garlic in gentle cooking. When I'm not ill I swim four hours a week. Not sure what else I can bloody do at this point.my real issue is sleep as a long term insomniac I'm never well rested. But I've tried everything for that and nothing has ever worked for longer than a week or so.

QueenBitch666 · 11/12/2023 17:13

Similar here so following with interest. Still trying to shake off a virus from 6 weeks ago
Not had to covid to the best of my knowledge

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 11/12/2023 17:29

Me too OP. I've had a cold since mid October. It has done 3 full circuits (head, sinus, throat, chest etc) and now I think I'm holding it at bay by resting a lot. I behave like an elderly person, if I've had a busy day I will rest the next day. I met some friends Fri night, not a late night or anything but i stayed home all day Sat to recover. The children are becoming accustomed to me needing to rest for an hour or so at a time. I have to rest after things that exhaust me including grocery shopping or vacuuming. I haven't done exercise in 2 months because the last 2 times I broke a sweat i had a relapse. I've had full bloods done, waiting on results now and started taking vitamin supplements. It's getting me so down, I feel like I'm living half a life

PeacheyPeach · 11/12/2023 20:11

@MissBubbla I'm going to screenshot your reply and literally copy everything you have done!!

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong that's how I feel, like I'm living a half life, always having to cancel plans because I'm not well again and it's so depressing, feel like my years are on repeat, feel so dull and lifeless!

OP posts:
Notsurehwhattdo · 11/12/2023 20:13

I rarely get sick. Good hand hygiene, a decent diet and a good night's rest go a long way. If you do all these things, maybe you are just more susceptible to colds.

PeacheyPeach · 11/12/2023 20:14

@Firefly2009 do you make a chicken broth every week or just when your poorly? I have to admit my dh made one last week because of me beig poorly and I had some every day it was great!

@piscofrisco I'm definitely going to increase my vitamins I think I take vitamin d but think I need to do more x

OP posts:
gerbo · 11/12/2023 20:21

@PeacheyPeach, I'm with you. I work in a school nursery with 3-4 year olds and it's a constant shower of coughs and sneezes over me from Oct-April! I have at least 2 hideous coughs which go to my chest (asthmatic) amd this year so far I've had: tonsilitis and now covid.

Doesn't help that more children seem to come in these days when seriously unwell.....

Watching with interest!

Cloud44 · 11/12/2023 20:22

@EdgarsTale do you take vitamin C, zinc & echinacea every day?

gerbo · 11/12/2023 20:23

And I cook from scratch each day, drink shedloads of water, wash my hands lots at school, and workout twice a week.

It's a bit depressing, I agree with you.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 11/12/2023 20:33

It's literally tradition for me to be sick every Christmas. I've had a never ending cold over the last 3 weeks. Not bad enough to be able to stay off work sick, or check out of activities and responsibilities but rough enough to feel permanently shitty and tired.

Last year I took every extra vitamin I could get my hands on, and it still didn't help.

And annoyingly, my kids and DH never get sick!!!! We joke that's because I get sick enough for all 5 of us 🤣

Sunshineandrainbows23 · 11/12/2023 21:03

EdgarsTale · 09/12/2023 12:31

I take very high dose vitamin C, Zinc & echinacea. I haven’t been ill at all this winter.

I echo this advice. And eating as many fresh fruits and veggies as you can manage too. :)
