I'll start with a handsome guy who runs the local coffee shop

A burnt out career girl home for the holidays who is slim with ling brown hair

She always has a mom who bakes and is endearing

Anything else?

Father Christmas (or one of his relatives) being ever present and there to give the story a gooey feel when the protagonists finally get together.

There usually needs to be a misunderstanding too, but it's ok because it was just their sister/brother/gay best friend.

Hastheslotharrivedyet · 05/12/2023 15:38

An interfering kid

AgMaggy · 05/12/2023 15:38

Flannel shirt worn by one of the main characters (ie the one who still lives in the small town they grew up in)

ssd · 05/12/2023 16:17

Yes and flannel shirt guy usually has a beard, but its well trimmed

Often a fairly patronising best friend who never left the small town, and a mean big city boss.

I saw an Instagram post where someone said they watched Christmas films backwards, to see a woman ditch her boring small town and boring boyfriend for an awesome career in the big city and a fabulous wardrobe with pencil skirts.

LubaLuca · 05/12/2023 16:24

Kookie best friend of female protagonist.
Someone's decorating cookies.

CactusPat · 05/12/2023 16:25

Widower with a cute kid.

Complex backstory about one of the main characters hating Christmas.

Picking/decorating a Christmas tree together and promptly falling in love.

Some sort of misunderstanding that almost derails romance but is resolved last minute (phew!)

Lead woman giving up career of dreams to stay in Candy Cane Creek with beardy widower and child because love is the most important thing, don’t stress about all those years becoming highly qualified when you could have A Festive Husband

witchypaws · 05/12/2023 16:26

Greedy land owner
Red check cushions/pjs/blankets
Travelling to small town
Seasonal drink/food
Tragic back story
Ice skating
Conveniently timed snow
Someone says something is a Christmas miracle
Disaster averted last minute
Family business

SiobhanSharpe · 05/12/2023 16:27

The leading man is clearly gay and there is zero chemistry between him and the female protagonist.
Lends a whole new dimension to "suspension of disbelief."

DoYouAgree · 05/12/2023 16:27

Sad back story.

Usually if main character has a child they make sure the other parent is dead to avoid any chance or reunion.

MammaWeasel · 05/12/2023 16:29

Eggnog and or hot chocolate in oversized Christmas mugs

Iwanttheraintostop · 05/12/2023 16:30

Annual Christmas dance where the whole town goes but main character doesn't want to as single until the end when she's not and does go to the dance

ssd · 05/12/2023 16:35

I forgot the snow and the picture perfect house with a million xmas decs and sparkly lights everywhere

OP posts:
monicagellerbing · 05/12/2023 16:52

A ridiculous amount of Xmas decorations in every building, especially Xmas trees

Butteredtoast55 · 05/12/2023 16:55

A lot of background music. It's constant.
Also, often a snow fall, maybe involving high jinks depending on the stage the romance is at, and some hot chocolate and cookies (at least they are mentioned, even if nobody ever eats or drinks)

BeforetheFlood · 05/12/2023 16:59

Either the hero or heroine hates Christmas and this is the most significant thing about them. For the first half hour they insert their dislike of the festive season into all conversations

Knackeredmommy · 05/12/2023 16:59

A baker/y.
A pretty little town where everyone knows everyone.
A busy businessman with no interest in a relationship.
A single mum with a saccharine sweet kid.

Lizzyinatizzy · 05/12/2023 17:01

Festive knitwear, a cute knitted hat at a jaunty angle, a matching scarf and gloves and a coordinating jumper. Usually both hands round a hot drink and big doe eyes

Also see a lot of bad lighting… cold winter days clearly filmed in summer, or grey filters over sunshine to make it look cold and miserable even though the actors are squinting 🤣

AngelsWithSilverWings · 05/12/2023 18:01

Has anyone mentioned that the learning lady must always have a fabulous and very flattering cashmere coat and lovely bouncy hair.

Wingsnfly · 05/12/2023 19:02

And has to be lent sensible boots by a gruff down to earth, but kind older woman who will turn out to be the love interests "Grammy"

And always dresses in festive red and green at all times

CrushingOnRubies · 05/12/2023 20:30

A douche bag ex boyfriend which is why she's back in her small home town for the first time I. Years. They used to spend Christmas with his family in the city
