Got a velvetier, massively underwhelmed!!

I mean any hot chocolate scratch’s a sweet itch but I was expecting something really special and it’s possibly just above average…

We got a mixed box of sachets and so far I’ve tried the 70% chocolate and the Milky…

Is there tips to make it better? Any types/flavours that are nicer than others, am I not making it right?

I feel like it’s not thick or sweet enough and the froth is not blowing me away!

I love mine but was underwhelmed with the HC sachets. I use Whittard hot chocolate in mine and make it with almond milk.

moggerhanger · 04/12/2023 18:59

Another vote here for proper cocoa, made with hot milk and sugar. A tablespoon or two of condensed milk is a great addition.

Rosiiee · 04/12/2023 19:03

@Jifmicroliquid oh my gosh why did I never think of that!!!! Off to the shops tomorrow to buy Nescafé caramel latte sachets and oat milk!!!!

We use chocolate, melted in hot milk. I add the chocolate to the hot milk, let it cool slightly, then heat it again whilst whisking. There's something about the double cooking that seems to help it retain its heat. (My main complaint about shop-bought hot chocolate is that it is never hot enough.)

LumiB · 04/12/2023 19:12

I love mine, its nice and creamy. Sometimes I use the sachets or I buy other chocolate and grate it.

I dont want it to be too sweet.

I add salted caramel syrup and small marshmallows to mine after

Wallabyone · 04/12/2023 19:12

We used all the sachets that came with it and then I never bought them again. Sainsbury's do a nice drinking chocolate (basically cocoa and sugar) and we all prefer it (always add squirty cream!).

WinterNamechange · 04/12/2023 19:13

Make sure you register its warranty. We are on our 5th velvetiser since 2019 - HC are good about replacing but only if it's registered!

If you want super creamy hot chocolate, use oat milk. It is the business.

This is soooo true. You can get chocolate oat milk. That is the business!

I'm feeling nostalgic. I haven't had hot chocolate in years but I suddenly thought of my primary school in a deprived area in the 1950s. Cadbury's used to donate great big drums of cocoa, the dinner ladies pour all our little bottles of free milk into great big saucepans and make cocoa. Then they'd bring them round to classrooms and we'd have hot cocoa before we went out for playtime. If you were lucky you mum might have wrapped up a biscuit for you.

That was the best cocoa/hot chocolate drink I've ever had.

LynetteScavo · 04/12/2023 21:00

I've only had the the hot chocolates from the Hotel Chocolate cafe, and I always ask for oat milk...they're always super velvety. Interesting that skimmed milk isn't so good. I still haven't given in to buying a velvetiser as I'm still using my milk frothier, which seems to do a good job.

What a lovely memory to have!

GladioliandSweetPeas · 04/12/2023 21:06

It's not even hot it comes out lukewarm and only makes half a cup!

fairygalaxy · 04/12/2023 21:07

What does it actually do?

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 04/12/2023 17:37

I'm trying to decide whether to buy one......I am just not sure if it's worth it. Especially if it needs ff milk as we never have that just ss.

Don't do it! It only makes half a normal sized mug's worth and it's certainly not hot. I had to put mine in the microwave afterwards which of course, defeated the object of it slightly

DurhamDurham · 04/12/2023 21:09

I hated cleaning ours, what a faff. I bought one of those battery operated hand held milk fro there from Amazon for about £5 and that gets used daily. Easy to wash too.

The best way to get a nice hot chocolate is to get a pot on the stove, heat up some double cream, add some milk, get a block or two of chocolate and break it up into small bits, mix all together until it melts.

This.

If you really have to use a Velvetiser add far more of their chocolate powder than recommended, and then reheat it to a decent drinking temperature in a pan…

RoseDog · 04/12/2023 21:13

We have one too, mostly used for Costa or nescafe sachets, it does make a nice coffee, for hot chocolate we just use whole milk and cadburys powder.

I don't think I'd miss it if we didn't have it!

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 04/12/2023 21:14

Another vote for oat milk - I don’t use it for anything else but it makes a cracking hot chocolate.

I’ve got the velvetiser advent calendar this year so I’m working through all the flavours! To be honest though I normally buy the 85% sachets so find most of the others are too sweet for my taste.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 04/12/2023 21:14

I really like ours but I like the darker chocolate sachets, love the ginger, I use oat milk and always warm the mug first. Kids like the milkier flavours.

TheChosenTwo · 04/12/2023 21:20

I use the sachets for the kids but use milk on the hob. I’m not one for unnecessary (in my eyes!) gadgets. Can make up 3 servings in one pan and they’re piping hot. I use 1.5 sachets per person and whisk until it’s done.
I bought the blackforest sachets last year and tried one (I drink maybe one hot drink a year!) and it was very nice - I served it with squirty cream and a flake!

BeyondMyWits · 04/12/2023 21:38

We had one given to us last Christmas. Love it. Don't know if we are lucky, but ours is hot enough... came with 2 mugs of the right size too.

With extensive testing I have found I like the sweeter, creamier ones. Apple pie is my current favourite, with the 50% milky one in second. DH likes the clementine one, the praline one and peanut butter one.

Hate the mince pie one and the ginger one. Not sweet enough to balance the flavour.

Jifmicroliquid · 05/12/2023 06:50

Those who say cleaning it is a faff, do you not just run it with a drop of washing up liquid in?
I think it’s ridiculously easy to clean.

That leaves smears on mine.

The only way to get it properly clean is to wash it under the tap and that is a PITA.

Makkacakka · 05/12/2023 09:06

Love our velvetiser! I think some people expect too much. It can't perform miracles. Just a decent hot chocolate. It's more convenient than heating up milk in a pan. If this one ever breaks, we'll definitely be getting another.

Makkacakka · 05/12/2023 09:08

Never found it much bother to clean either, takes a minute or two.
