Got a velvetier, massively underwhelmed!!

I mean any hot chocolate scratch’s a sweet itch but I was expecting something really special and it’s possibly just above average…

We got a mixed box of sachets and so far I’ve tried the 70% chocolate and the Milky…

Is there tips to make it better? Any types/flavours that are nicer than others, am I not making it right?

I feel like it’s not thick or sweet enough and the froth is not blowing me away!

I find a lot of the hotel chocolat flavours too dark/bitter. In our house We like the salt caramel flavour, and the new apple pie one.
And I’ve had some nice ones from pendragon drinks.

TeenDivided · 04/12/2023 17:25

It's not a frother, it's a velvetiser. Grin
Will be thicker with full fat milk.

keye · 04/12/2023 17:26

I love mine. I use costa chocolate powder in mine, sometimes grated galaxy

The best way to get a nice hot chocolate is to get a pot on the stove, heat up some double cream, add some milk, get a block or two of chocolate and break it up into small bits, mix all together until it melts.

ThreeRingCircus · 04/12/2023 17:32

Are you using full fat milk?

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 04/12/2023 17:37

I'm trying to decide whether to buy one......I am just not sure if it's worth it. Especially if it needs ff milk as we never have that just ss.

We made ours with skimmed for ages and it was just fine.
But not rich and creamy.

HamHand · 04/12/2023 17:42

The best tip that I got, from MN, was to warm
my mug with boiling water while the velvetiser was on. I also tend to put a teaspoon or so extra of grated chocolate on top of what comes in the sachet.

Whatineed · 04/12/2023 17:45

I wasn't impressed either. I use a Bialetti machine now, it's amazing does hot chocolate, and has milk settings for iced cappuccino, cappuccino and latte.

Full fat milk works best but I don't find the Hotel Chocolat powder the best, find a traditional Italian hot chocolate or make Jamie Olivers version. They have cornflour in them which makes them really thick.

sazza42 · 04/12/2023 17:54

If you want super creamy hot chocolate, use oat milk. It is the business.

WhamBamThankU · 04/12/2023 17:54

I heard good things about the aldi version

Whodhaveem · 04/12/2023 17:58

So we are using full fat and my teenage has tried to tell me it only works with the Hotel Chocolat sachets…im not sure why I didn’t question it!! 😅

i do thinks that it, it is quite bitter and almost watery rather thank thick, sweet and milky…

I did actually win it rather than buying one so I can’t complain too much but will definitely be trying some of your tips!

I got a free one from MN to test and I was underwhelmed too. Not hot enough and a faff to clean.

IIRC, the mint and whit chocolate sachets were the best.

I've shoved loads of things in mine though - biscoff spread makes a lovely drink for example.

We use skimmed but I did try full fat to give it a fair trial when testing it. Didn't seem to make a huge difference TBH.

gotomomo · 04/12/2023 18:02

Best chocolate drink is cocoa, some full fat milk, sugar and heat on the hob gently, then add additional milk (or cream for more decadence) to taste. No fancy equipment needed and any 100% cocoa has the same result though I do buy fair trade for ethical reasons.

gotomomo · 04/12/2023 18:04

Should add I eat at least 70% cocoa chocolate so chocolate more than cream for me!

Of course it works with other chocolate. How would it know? It's just a milk frother - if you won it you haven't wasted money on it being called a velvetiser, but the fact is that velvetisers are just milk frothers. DD has an Aldi one (£19.99) which does the trick.

I used Swiss miss in ours. Comes out lovely. The children didn’t like it though. Peasants.

We haven’t used it in over a year, it’s gathering dust on the bench. Should get rid of it really

Rosiiee · 04/12/2023 18:13

Ooh you’re making me want to pull mine out now! The kids love the peanut butter flavour but I only use half a sachet because I like mine more milky and not as sweet. I love that it’s always just the right temp!

Happiestathome · 04/12/2023 18:16

I must admit, I feel the same about ours. The only one we all seem to really enjoy is salted caramel. My husband quite enjoys Clementine too

Jifmicroliquid · 04/12/2023 18:24

If you like coffee, use the Nescafé sachets (double chocca mocha, vanilla latte etc) in the Velvetiser with full fat milk.
Game changer!

thestorm · 04/12/2023 18:30

I love mine. We ran out of milk the other day and I needed hot chocolate. Remembered I had evaporated milk in the cupboard so gave that a go. Total game changer for me.

Bobbob2015 · 04/12/2023 18:33

I love mine, one of the best things I’ve bought. It took me a while to adapt to the sachets not being as sweet as some but two years in it’s one of the best things Ive bought.

Badgrief · 04/12/2023 18:48

I have used mine almost every day for a year. I use semi skimmed milk usually. I love the salted caramel flavour, prefer the bags to the sachets as I use a bit less than suggested amount. I have tried grating bars of chocolate and chocolate chips - chips need the milk heating a little before they're added. Chai latte powder gives a lovely thick frothy drink

Anonymouslyposting · 04/12/2023 18:54

Use more than the recommended amount of chocolate - I’ve been known to use two sachets when I try want a treat but 1.5 is probably the sweet spot.

1 70% sachet and half a ginger sachet is my favourite but anything dark is good. I also use Knoops sachets which are lush.
