Where should I go for a few days

I'm looking for a UK winter break for a few days. Looking for less than 3 hour train from Newcastle area. Could drive but wouldn't want to drive for more than a couple of hours. Where would you go? I thought about Edinburgh but I've been quite a few times. Where would you go? Just want somewhere where I can chill, explore, read books, maybe swim, maybe go to the cinema, maybe a cathedral visit, shop, good food, shop etc.

York, Harrogate, Leeds.

Whitby. My favourite place and so much to do nearby.

Is it not a bit quiet at this time of year?

Hadn't thought of Leeds or Harrogate. I'll take a look. York a possibility.

I love York. Bath is lovely too but probably too far.

Hi OP, from memory it's about 2.5 hours on the train.

Far from it. I went for a day trip between Christmas and New Year fairly recently.

It was rammed. It was a 'nice weather for winter and we could all do with getting out of the house' sort of day but even so. I got the last parking space in the big car park and I had to queue about 20 minutes to get fish and chips and that wasn't at The Magpie either.

But from your brief I'd pick York and stay in a spa hotel, I think there's at least one in the centre.

Whitby. Beautiful winter walks, nice shops, cafes and restaurants. Quaint little pubs.

York is a good one too

muddyford · 03/12/2023 20:13

Ripon Cathedral is gorgeous!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 03/12/2023 20:13

Chester.

Swim? In what? A crappy local pool or a freezing body of water? Neither are tempting.

Scarborough for some sea side but not much else. York ?

Cambridge can be done in 3 hours 11 minutes if you get the right connections.
