If you were a car key where would you be?

We've checked all the obvious places. It's not in the key bowl, any drawers, bags, coat pockets, trouser pockets, on any worktops, under sofa cushions, in the car. We do have a 1 year old but we've checked everywhere we can think that he could have put it!

I don't know OP but when you find yours, ask them if they know were mine are!

Elderflower14 · 03/12/2023 20:18

My friends lost their car key. Looked everywhere, couldn't find it... Ordered a new key. The next morning J was emptying the bin. Took the bin bag out and there was the car key at the bottom of the bin!!

kiwimelonlime · 03/12/2023 20:20

In one of the Children's toys? I once found mine in the back bit of a Playmobil Dumper Truck 😵‍💫

DuesToTheDirt · 03/12/2023 20:21

I once lost a car key for about a month, and eventually found it on the floor underneath a bag. We had vacuumed in the meantime, but obviously not very thoroughly Grin.

Wimpeyspread · 03/12/2023 20:23

In the back pocket of whoever drove it last

InTheRainOnATrain · 03/12/2023 20:24

In the car?? We did that once, having locked it with the second key. Then it got stolen as a result. Thankfully it has a tracker!

gamerchick · 03/12/2023 20:24

Do you leave your door unlocked during the day? Some people do walk in thefts. In and out before anyone notices, until they realise their keys/handbag/phones etc have gone poof.

Hope you find it though. Might be worth attaching something to track it with if husband loses things

TicTacNicNak · 03/12/2023 20:26

I know you need to find this key, and hopefully it will turn up, but don't you have a spare set? Cars usually come with two sets of keys.

I would definitely double check anywhere your OH has already looked if his ability to look is anything like my husbands.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 03/12/2023 20:29

Here's a proper 'woo' solution. Stop looking and just say very clearly, 'Please return the keys, universe!' Then go back to the coat pockets etc and see if it has been 'returned'.

I do not believe in nonsense but this has yielded results several times in our house. I think it's because it stops you panicking and puts the onus on 'the universe' to produce them. They will have been in a frantically searched bag all along.

Lunchbag
Kitchen cupboard
Bathroom drawer along with toilet bag
Hanging from Christmas tree
Cat litter box

throughgrittedteeth · 03/12/2023 20:38

Fridge
Windowsill in loo

Alighttouchonthetiller · 03/12/2023 20:40

Is it only the car keys on the key ring? Our house keys are on there too. DH always leaves them in the lock on the outside of the back door. Might be worth a look.

TheScientists · 03/12/2023 20:46

As far as I see it if you've actually looked in all these places already (real looking, not DH has "looked") you have two options:

Bribe the toddler with a packet of chocolate buttons for swap with car keys

Pray to St Anthony, patron saint of finding things (I think, my nanna would have known, but she swore by it)

Choosea · 03/12/2023 21:37

I just found mine in the bathroom behind the laundry basket?!

Flyhigher · 04/12/2023 05:07

In the toaster. The laundry basket.

curaçao · 04/12/2023 05:25

Has your dc 'posted' it somewhere?

halfbakedkate · 04/12/2023 05:57

When mine were little, I lost my car keys and spent the whole day turning the house upside down searching for them. Eventually found them in the ignition of the Little Tikes car in the garden.

halfbakedkate · 04/12/2023 05:58

Meant to add...do you have a Little Tikes car?!

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 04/12/2023 06:02

Washing basket/washing machine/dryer - 99% of things I lose turn up somewhere in the laundry cycle!

minisoksmakehardwork · 04/12/2023 06:10

Get DH to walk through everything he did when he got home on the occasion the keys were lost, with something in place of the keys so when he puts that down, that's where the keys will likely be.

Places I'd suggest:
Downstairs toilet
Next to the telephone
In a different coat pocket to the one he normally uses - get him to check all pockets rather than 'it's not in there' looking where he doesn't look in places he thinks it cannot be.
On the floor of the coat cupboard/hanging area.
In the car!
Dumped his side of the sofa and slid on the floor underneath.
Kitchen worktop - near the kettle/mugs/hot drink stuff.
In a completely different coat to the coat he thinks he wore.

KickboxingWanker · 04/12/2023 06:14

On the roof of the car!
Thats where mine were, I’d searched for ages eventually gave up and used the spare key.
Drove to and parked up at work, got out of the car and spotted them on the roof. They had been there overnight and somehow survived the 10 mile drive.

RedHelenB · 04/12/2023 06:20

Bin

Rocknrollstar · 04/12/2023 07:25

Mine were in the greenhouse. adds were under the lining of her handbag

We do have a spare!

Also, this was the winner. I'd double checked most of the places he'd checked, I got all his dirty gym clothes out of the washing basket and checked them but turns out there was one pair of joggers in the back of a cupboard in the garage (which he'd already checked) that I didn't see. He really needs a lesson in putting things where they belong, he's terrible

If your DH is anything like mine, it was left on the seat of the car.... and miraculously was still there the next morning. I have hidden the spare.
