Do you keep a diary? If so, why?

Thinking of getting someone a diary as a gift but then I'm thinking, is it a good thing? Do people revisit them in years to come to look back on their thoughts?

What do you do with yours?

I do, but not a ‘thoughts’ one, just a practical if-I-don’t-write-this-down-I’ll-forget-it one.

So more for appointments than reflection?

I kept a diary from about 12 until my early 20s. They’re full of introspection and the pop star I was in love with and not much was happening. I never look at them.

I wish I’d kept a diary when the DC were small though, as I find it hard to remember what it was like. Facebook memories is the next best thing.

I do. I have a child with SEN and I find it helps to jot things down each day - looking back I can see patterns to behaviour etc which can help with supporting them.

But I started keeping a diary before I had kids. Mostly to record days out, write about special occasions etc. Nothing particularly introspective, but more like "went to X museum with Sandra, went to Y pub afterwards for a meal".

Yes, it's interesting to look back over old ones.

I have a five year diary "2 lines a day" sort of thing. Just about to start my third one. Been lovely reading it back actually. Been 10 years already. So much has happened that I actually forgot about. I lost my sibling recently so it's been lovely reading the memories

Mine is just a normal diary for work and appointments. I cannot work my phone calender at all.
