Please give me an idea - fancy dress.

Just read the extra bit added on to a family party invite - it’s fancy dress. I struggle enough finding party wear never mind fancy dress. I am not a party person. I can’t turn it down as it means so much to the birthday person.
I am frumpy , fat and nearly a pensioner so it won’t be glamorous! I just need an idea to get me started…..there doesn’t seem to be a theme - so the world’s my lobster( could I go as that!)

Could you just wear normal clothes then something fancy dress / themed as a headdress, hat, wig?

I think disowning your family might be easiest

I do love a proper witch costume. One with all the proper parts and good makeup.

Bunnyannesummers · 02/12/2023 23:16

Devil or cat is easy

Windywuss · 02/12/2023 23:17

A Xmas party? Just stick a Santa hat on and wear red. I feel your pain.

Unicorn34 · 02/12/2023 23:19

Pair of Y-fronts = premature ejaculation. "I've come in my pants"!!

Sorry, had a few too many this evening.

Grimmz · 02/12/2023 23:26

Witch/cat feels too halloweeny. And I'm assuming it's not a Christmas party.

  • all-white outfit with a red hat = tampon
  • all-black outfit with a Starbucks cup = barista
  • carry a basket of lemons and hand them out to people at the party = life

Christmas tree, green tube dress with three tiers of gathered green netting (like those gypsy skirts from years ago). Widest tier at the hemline. Add tinsel or a few baubles, or a star in your hair.

Elf, green or red tights, contrasting green or red tunic, boots, elf hat.

Shepherd or Angel Gabriel with a school nativity play style costume.

Christmas cheer. wear ordinary clothes, but write/draw labels with "CHEERS" then pin them randomly on your clothes.

Have a look on the internet for ideas inspiration.

Myideaofhell · 02/12/2023 23:47

Thanks for your ideas - it’s in January so not really Christmas themed. I will look on Pinterest- I’d quite like some sort of mask to hide behind .

Is there not a theme?

Warmhandscoldheart · 02/12/2023 23:50

Embrace the fat and frumpy.

I went to a fancy dress as an old fashioned housewife.
Curlers in my hair with a scarf over the top, apron over a normal dress and the fugliest slippers I could find.

Loved every minute of the night 😀

Best and simplest costume I ever saw was a guy dressed all in normal top and trousers in one colour (he went for a brightish blue) with a black beret worn straight, not on the slant (if you know what I mean) and with a big label attached to a ribbon round his neck which said DRINK ME - Voila, you're the shrinking potion from Alice in Wonderland. Labels like these https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/933582197727413535/

So low effort and clever.

May 26, 2021 - The variety that food and drink have in one area can create confusion if it is in large quantities. The tags that are in each food and drink will be one way to achieve efficiency in finding the type of food or drink you are looking for.

I got a fancy dress nuns outfit off eBay years ago for a Singalong Sound of Music night. I used the outfit at a fancy dress party, really just a long black dress and a headpiece which means you don’t have to do your hair. And nuns are usually make up free. If you’re not at risk of offending any religious party goers take a bottle of water and just randomly flick water over people and ‘bless’ them!

verrymerryberry · 03/12/2023 00:09

Where's wally was dead easy but probably a bit dated now! (Red stripy top, comedy nerd glasses and a beanie)

How about another cartoon character- Velma from scooby doo?

A minion -yellow top and dungarees yellow hat

Bank robber - black trousers stripy top swag bag and mask.

verrymerryberry · 03/12/2023 00:10

Scarecrow jeans check shirt and bit of straw

Yeah, you could go as Norah Batty and if you know of a random bloke also going, he could dress up as Compo.

Windywuss · 03/12/2023 08:35

How about a bank robber? Cartoon style. Striped top, black trousers, swag bag, Hat, black but out mask?

AdaColeman · 03/12/2023 09:22

A 1920s outfit would be easy to put together, a long string of beads, headband made out of a scarf perhaps with a feather. Can you do the Charleston?

Myideaofhell · 03/12/2023 19:15

Thanks everyone - going towards black leggings and stripy top with a bag marked SWAG ….and thankfully a mask!
