I've been incredibly stupid.

Anyone still up? I've been so incredibly stupid and got scammed. Bought something (if I say what it will make me sound 100 times more stupid) from a fb group and of course it was a fucking scam.

I've been on call with my bank and they opened an investigation but I don't hold much hope. Firstly, because it's my fault for being such an idiot , secondly because them getting the other bank to pay is unlikely.

Feeling very sorry for myself, while also angry at myself and now crying with frustration at the whole thing.

Such an idiot...

I really hope you get a positive outcome with your bank. There are some truly awful people out there who deserve a lifetime of public lice infestations.

dudsville · 02/12/2023 22:36

You've not been stupid. Of course we need to be wary, but the fault is solely the scammer's, not yours at all. They get smarter and smarter, it's really not your fault. I hope you can shift the feelings more towards anger at them.

Winglessvulture · 02/12/2023 22:39

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. Scams these days are sophisticated and difficult to spot and can play on our emotions. You are not stupid, you are just unlucky to have encountered one. I really hope your bank can help you resolve this.

OhHowTheDogsStackUp · 02/12/2023 22:41

I've got money back from a scam on Gumtree. It did take a lot longer than a normal bank inquiry, but I got in the end.

Don't give up hope!

Aquamarine1029 · 02/12/2023 22:42

You're not stupid, op, and I'm so sorry this happened. Try your best to just let it go.

There are so many rotten, thieving, miserable fucking bastards out there.

I just had a feeling it was all wrong, of course it was.., but then I didn't want to miss out in case it was genuine and it was something DD would've absolutely loved. Would never spend that much on myself.

I'll keep the anger towards myself as a reminder to never ever do it again.- in response to the other poster

Was it Taylor Swift tickets? Heard of a few people getting scammed recently.

MadeOfAllWork · 02/12/2023 22:49

A friend worked for a high street bank and had a young lad, 18, come in saying there had been fraudulent activity on his account and could they help.
He had been trying to buy a pair of trainers online. The company called him and said that the payment hadn’t gone through so could he try again. He did. They called again, nope, didn’t work please try again. They continued to do this using different bank accounts and details until they had taken £17,000 off him. As he had willing undertaken every transaction he didn’t get a penny back.

Hopefully your problem isn’t that big, op.

It's so frustrating that social media doesn't do more to protect against this. The people that try and trick others out of their money are just awful and I really hope that more is done in the future to trace and prosecute them. Please be kind to yourself, you were doing a lovely thing for your daughter.

My dd tried to buy tickets on twitter. Obviously it was a scam. Bank refunded her

Glad to hear that. For her sake as well as mine. Bank said it'll take around 15 days for the investigation and they'll send info with what they're doing and what stage it's at so it's not a straightforward process.

@MadeOfAllWork an 18 year old lad had £18k in his current account ...wow

Pinkpinkpink15 · 02/12/2023 23:34

It sounds hopeful your bank will sort it out.

the scams are so sophisticated now, it could be anyone of us getting caught out.

best of luck with the refund!

It was his mum’s money apparently.

They will try , starting an investigation and the guys on the phone were lovely, but I doubt I'll get a refund. At least I did a lot of overtime and that's the money I used. This close to Christmas, it could've been a lot worse.

True, or at least once they are made aware this stuff is going on. It must be hard to prevent accounts/groups actually being set up or used in this way (particularly long standing accounts as this one was), but surely they can be stopped from doing it at least from the same account. I reported the group and this person who is also an admin of the group to FB. I also reported our conversation as a scam. Her account and the group are still merrily going on , scamming more people. I however got banned from the group for trying to warn others.

Urgh!!
they could put a temporary block on the accounts until they investigate, but I suppose that leaves oeople open to false accusations screwing their legitimate businesses up.

such a mess isn't it!!

If it is Taylor Swift tickets there is a lot of user policing in the local groups I'm in, as soon as a ticket post appears there are numerous comments of scam to warn people who don't know that these type of posts are scams so hopefully no one is getting ripped off

Blueberrypizza · 04/12/2023 09:45

If it was Taylor Swift tickets, we had someone in a local group get scammed by someone selling them.

In case it helps anyone else, what came out of that one is that if you searched the name of the person who was selling the supposed tickets and filtered for posts by them, you could see they had joined and posted in loads of random Facebook groups all over the country with the same selling post.

ComSci · 04/12/2023 10:03

I nearly got scammed by this too. Local group selling TS tickets. I was sceptical from the beginning as you don’t need to sell on a local Facebook group, it’s Taylor Swift for gods sake. They were going to transfer through the tickets master app it they wanted payment by bank transfer and when I insisted it should be through Ticketmaster they said I could go elsewhere.

could someone explain what happens if you do pay. Do the tickets just not show up?

the person was based in Bristol.
